That & the level before had me raging hard due to multiple factors, one of which was exactly that!
If Illusionist & necromancer weren’t so heavily nerfed, this would have been a non-issue & said levels would still have been challenging yes, but not complete & utter bullshit unfair!
It took me 18 minutes to beat Machine Palace, & R&D was taking so long i quit 5 times to alter my strategy, only to be completely invalidated immediately after every single one!
In the end the only way i beat that level was by unlocking Spy & grinding A LOT to get him up to par with the correct stats just to get past ONE room, & to rub salt into the wound he was almost completely useless immediately after, the only reason he stayed on the team for the fallowing levels save the final boss was out of pure fear of the the exact scenario repeating.
Spellblade & Bard are the only constants (makes sense, they are the only S tiers in the current meta) with either of the two 3x3’s filling in #3 (pre-nerf) & #4 was usually Thief, Priestess, Knight & even Huntress one time due to various, sometimes very specific niches.
I see you don’t have a lot of ranged characters leveled up. Which definitely makes Machine Palace/R&D tricky since they require so much ranged damage.
Honestly I didn’t anticipate a melee/power focus to get through the game with so few ranged picks. Machine Palace/R&D should have a route that allows that.
What I am really curious about, is what room specifically did you require the Spy for? The original draft of R&D did have a room that required ranged sneak but I took that out pretty quickly when I remember the Spy is the only ranged sneaker in the game.
I have some ideas for how I’d change Machine Palace/R&D but I’d like to consider it more.
Oh yeah, also a side note: people keep telling me the Bard is their top tier supporter (and she is in like early game) but honestly on my playthroughs I always drop her once I start getting AOE supports.

Just beat the game, it’s been one of my favorites ever since i discovered it over a year ago! It’s got so many cuties! <3 And it’s very fun to min/max. I really appreciate how original the gameplay is, it’s so evocative! Thank you for this gift
I’m really interested in this game but ngl (and this may sound whiney) as a male wg enjoyer only it’s frustrating that i’ll have to play hours of content before I can unlock any male characters
