Eat The Dungeon General Discussion

I don’t really want to massively change how rendering is done because I don’t want to spent a lot of time on engineering solutions. Maintaining weekly-ish updates is important to me, I already think the game doesn’t update frequently enough

Eat the Dungeon Update v0.7.5 is here!

This update mainly features the Knight’s final weight sequence, but it also includes the optimization of the stuffing levels and slight adjustment to level timing.

Patch Notes

  • 5 new weight levels for the Knight
  • There are now 5 stuffing levels per weight level, and the file size of the images has been optimized. The game went from 140MB to 26MB in size because of these changes, and it loads much MUCH faster
  • The goal timer algorithm has been adjusted to be more forgiving on levels with a lot of weapon-type enemies

Now that the weight levels for this update cycle are done, the only thing left at the tutorials. I would like to spend a week or two on them at most.

What I’d like to ask you all is: what things in the game would you like to see in the tutorials? What are things that were hard for you to figure out, or what things have you still not figured out? What would you have liked to know earlier?

Bug that I noticed: sometimes the character portrait bug out a little after attack and display a portrait from an earlier weight level for a moment. This doesn’t effect the gameplay at all, but still something I thought I’d point out.

Algorithm change helped a little, but Beefcake Dragon Bonus round S time is still 20% faster than my best run, even using fully-built, end-game characters. I even re-specced my witch in an attempt to beat it and still couldn’t get any better of a time.

If I had to list whats necessary, the tutorial should include
-item use

  • type matchups
    -attack patterns
    -enemies
    -weight/overstuffing and
-stats/stat upgrades, its practically all you need to play the game

Honestly, alt costumes just as an art project would be amazing-obviously not a priority!-but something to maybe consider? I know it would be well-received if you did have some in mind for them.

Palette swaps maybe, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up at new costumes since that would require a whole new set of pictures to be created. 5+ each per character given the weight stages, as well as for when they are stuffed.

What browser/device are you getting this on? I don’t get it myself

I wanted to be very restrained in how much I changed the algorithm. I think I will re-evaluate it again once another character comes out.

Alt-costumes would be just as difficult as adding a whole new character, I’d rather add new characters right now.

I’m using Safari on my iOS.

Edit: I tried playing on my laptop to test this, and yeah, I’m not getting the bug at all. It’s only on my mobile device.

I was barely able to make it to S rank in the Beefcake bonus round, and that’s with Illusionist and Spellblade, with a time of 9.632 seconds.

Did you have to use the ‘shrink the window until everything is tiny’ method? That’s about the only thing I haven’t done yet.

yea, but I’ve been doing that for a while…

So this is what I’m thinking for the new tutorials. The game and timer will pause, and this screen will animate in. It’ll have a little title and a dialog box, and also a static image to show what we’re talking about.

Tutorials will only show up the first time you play a level, and there will be an option to reset the tutorials show they show up another time.

Will there be an option to not do tutorials at all?

I hadn’t planned on it. I wouldn’t want to just throw new players to the wolves

if the tutorials are just one click away then not having a skip option isn’t that big a deal. something you could do though is have the tutorial messages in some type of menu. so if you forgot something you can just look there instead of resetting the tutorials and replay the level you think it was in
