Gain of Life: A weight gain life simulator [v0.50.0]

Hmm, I think if the price per month was lowered, it might be a more attractive idea, but right now I’m having a hard time justifying continuing at $12 per month when the content is as limited/repetitive as it is currently. It’s difficult to see how this game will expand to be worth asking $130+ up front.

Just my opinion, but the only real beneficiary of the one-year sub is Patreon.

  • Patreon get a guaranteed one-year income (minus whatever discount the creator offers, of course).

  • The creator gets a lump sum which disincentivises them from working as hard/at all as they’ve already been paid regardless.

  • The patron pays a large amount up front and then has to trust the creator to produce a years worth of content.

Oh, and $12 a month? I need to charge more for my game! :stuck_out_tongue:

I see your point, probably it is better to stay at the monthly concept, it brings too many risks for too small benefit, I agree, Patreon makes the most out of that deal.

However, January is approaching, so the release of the next version too.
This is the new size, included in the next version, I think it is the best stage ever:

This image actually was an error while rendering (I was messing with lights), but I thought this fits perfectly in here, because on Patreon you can now find the picture in full color  Also I have a list of previous stages I will change a little, mostly it’s her feet looking “unhealthy” on how they are orientated, that’s because the pose and the extra pose of the shoes she is wearing are conflicting. Also, I feel like her belly looks in the currently last stage too hard, so I made it softer.

Regarding her feet: I seriously have never taken a look at her feet, (I am a gentleman, I would never dare a look away from a woman’s eyes). The funny part of this story is nobody has never ever reported or said anything about it, on her fancy outfit from stage 1 she doesn’t even wear shoes at all!

Well in my opinion charging 12$ a month is already quite unreasonable price when it comes to getting unfinished buggy concept of a game. Not to mention risk of you not delivering regularly or abandoning it all together. And when you mention you would like to create annual charge of 132$ is almost out of this world expectation. I understand that your development capacity is limited as well as audience for this type of game. But compared to AAA titles that have been developed for several years by large team of developers charging about 60$ at release date? I would rather wait for complete game sold as indie title for price most indie games are valued at, at this time its anywhere from 10 - 30$. Currently I m subscribed to you for one month as I wanted to see if the game had promise and it does, but I will not be subscribed until the time when its close to completion (To why, as I said above, current update rate compared in between the versions does not hold value of 12$ for me. Compared to Weighting game from Tiggertoo, your game seams on far lover level of update quality in all aspects from writing level, number of scenes added to just the pure load of pictures added in each release). I don t have problem paying for good game and in this category overpay for it compared to similar games with bigger audience, but paying what would be 2 AAA games and 1 DLC worth for promise you might finish in a year? I think not even mad man should pay that.
Anyway, good luck to you sir.

I am so sorry to hear that you think the price-value does not fit for the game in your opinion. You already named the reason for the price: The audience is limited. Those top titles have a waaay bigger audience than this game will ever have: Some of them have Millions of purchases, each one 60$, some are even higher and include in-game-purchases. If such a game has 4,000,000 downloads this means $240,000,000 for the team that programmed the game. An experienced, well-paid developer earns $100,000 per year, meaning if the game took 2 years to develop they could pay over 1000 developers for that time. For example, Blizzard Entertainment has 3,500 employees and makes ~6,500,000,000$ a year. If (their sales would be 100% profit and) they would split it equally to all employees they could pay each of them 1,800,000$ a year! If I had no costs and my Patreon would be 100% profit, I could not even live from that money.

To compare it to this game: Until now I earned an average of less than 0$ a month, additionally, I have to purchase hardware like a computer in order to develop the game. I am so sorry to all those people that can not afford those $12 a month, but they are absolutely necessary to keep the game alive. When I would start making profit with this game then I might be able to lower the prices. Lowering them right now will only extremely slow down the progress and since the 3d assets are by far the most expensive part of the game this will mean that I am forced to significantly change my plans in order to include fewer graphics.

The game does not include a lot of scenes and does not get “large” updates (please consider that I release every month, that’s quite frequently for a one-man show), that is absolutely true, but you only know half of the big whole: This game already consists in total out of 6,610 lines of code, that’s a higher average of additional 1,500 lines per month since I started. Only around 600 lines of those 6,610 actually are text actually displayed in the game, basically you see less than 10% of the actual things happening in the game.

So as you can probably already see from those numbers, the game focuses on much more than just the graphics. There are algorithms in the background, for example, the algorithm that makes you gain weight, it took me multiple weeks to finish (I did it before the game project started). I put lots of effort into the game to make some things, that might look logical and self-evident, for example, if you eat, you gain weight. Directly after stuffing yourself, you weigh more, after the food processed you weigh less again (but usually more than you did before stuffing yourself). This game would make so much faster progress if programming would just be typing without sitting in front of the screen crying why the hell your code is not working until you finally give up, undo your changes and try again.

I agree, currently, there is not much to play, but those parts you can play are stuffed with so many little details, most of them happening in the background, but the total of each of them makes the game so close to reality.

Again, I am so sorry that I have to set the price at $12 per month, I would not do it if this was not necessary.

you’re fine it’s understandable that you making a game would want money since it is your time and effort being spent on this some people either don’t have money or just want free stuff and will try to get free stuff out of you

Many people were asking for an comparision between all stages, I just posted one on Patreon. Bronze- and Silver-Patrons have access to it, just the new stage, which will be part of the January-version is blurred.

Gold-Patrons have access to this image without any blurs, that’s because there have never been actual benefits for Gold-Patrons making a difference between Silver and Gold. There will not be a significant difference in the future as well, but to provide at least a small difference to thank those people who decided to support the game extraordinarily, I will post such a comparision from now on each month, including the not-released stage, just blurred (except for Gold-Patrons in full quality).

To be fair, my game has been in development for over a year, so it’s natural that there’s a bit more game/story. I haven’t played @SirMister’s game (yet), but I’m sure that the initial releases of mine are every bit as buggy, if not more. It’s nigh on impossible for a one man ‘team’ to test their own work properly.

Hey there SirMister, I found this game about a week ago and i have to say, the free version has me very impressed. I was considering becoming a patron but am currently in a tight financial situation and also with it being the end of the month i’d probably wait until January anyway. However as soon as I’ve improved my situation I plan on donating. One thing does bother me though. I’ve read this entire thread and you seem to have a lot of great ideas but i don’t know when they’ll come to fruition. So I was wondering if you could walk me through what you plan to add to the game in the coming months. Nothing fancy, just a brief summary of the planned features and around when we should expect them to be added. Thank you very much for your continued devotion to this project, I’m sure the final product will be great!

I’m glad you like the game, if you ever get to play the Patreon version you will notice that there are quite a lot of more features than there are in the free version. And hang on, you’ve read the whole thread? :scream: To be honest, I have never thought somebody will ever do that, except they were following this thread from the very beginning. That’s the reason why I always try to write posts that even a newbie can understand without reading the whole thread (the reason why I repeat myself sometimes).

Waiting until the 1st of January with your membership is not a bad idea, when subscribing at the end of a month Patreon will charge you twice in just a few days.

Unluckily I cannot tell you when what will be added to the game because there is nothing like a detailed project plan of when I want to be added what, there is just a “big plan” explaining a very basic concept and idea. Usually I decide while creating the game what I want to add, so I could not even tell you what’s added next, I can only tell you what I am adding right now or what I have added recently.

Here is the “big plan”:
The idea is to make a pre-realistic life simulator: Making everything very close to reality, but removing annoying parts of real life (e.g. aging, death, …) and adding things that’d be cool to have in real life (e.g. magic). When modifying the “life-concept” with magic, removing age etc. Those modifications will only be applied to “side-stories” and will not have a large impact on the main gameplay: You will not be able to attend a school for wizarding like in Harry Potter, but you might meet a witch somewhere in the forests.

Here is the “story” (I don’t plan to have an actual story, more like a ‘frame’ in which you play):
You are a girl, and you just graduated from High School. Depending on what you do you will open some opportunities but there will never be a “path-split” that if you do one thing you will never be able to do the other thing.
After college there already are some plans for jobs you will be able to do and what could happen if you do certain things: as a scientist you can invent addicting and fattening things, as a politician you can make weird policies that will make people gain weight, …

However, those things will be added later (= I don’t know when’s later) because right now going to college is still kind of a pain - it’s boring because there is not happening much. I am developing the game in the way the final game will be played: From the beginning until, well, I don’t know because I don’t want to have an end/game over in the game. Until politicians, scientists, whatever will be added there have certain things to be finished, primarily college.
Since there is no plan, something is not finished when a list of features is implemented, but when it is fun/interesting to play. So when college stays interesting until you finished it, then there will be after-college things. We are getting closer and closer to that point, it’s not going to take long anymore…

What am I doing right now?

I have decided to start re-rendering all stages in better quality. To see the difference try zooming into the pictures or making them full-screen (like they are in the game). The new sprites will be part of the January version, all other sprites will probably follow in February, except I get to finish them before the 3rd of January.

cool, thanks for the info! I’m definitely interested to see what new events you’ll add to the college and beyond.

Happy new year everyone and I hope it doesn’t take too long until everyone stops accidentally writing the old year in dates. I usually struggle until May…hopefully it doesn’t take too long this (or next) year, depending on where you live.

Hopefully 2021 will be better than 2020! Cheers!

The new version will become available to all Patrons at the beginning of January, as always. Make sure to not subscribe today, otherwise you will be charged twice (Patreon is being stupid)

what is the best food in terms of most calorie dense in version 0.3

Alright, as promised in previous posts I have started creating a nutrition table including all foods and drinks that can be bought in the supermarket, I will extend this table when I get the time to do so.

The things that have a larger Calories per Time are the most efficient weight gainers. Those with larger numbers in the column “calories per time per money” describe those products that make you gain weight fastest for the cheapest money.

Download (Excel): nutrition table.xlsx (11.8 KB)

I will extend this table soon, currently it only includes food, which can be bought at the local store.

PS: Subscribing to Patreon today will give you the maximum benefit for January, since all subscribers have access until January 31st and get re-charged on February 1st, those benefits include instant-access to the January-version as soon as it releases on January 3rd (for Silver- and Gold Patrons).

Many people complained that they forget to go to events, I think I have now found a pretty fancy solution for that: a calendar!
It will be shown to you when you are at home and always shows the present day and your plans for the future 4 days.

PS: The times the calendar shows you (e.g. 12:00-13:00) represent the time frame you have to attend this event. For example Trevor’s Party has a timeframe of 18:00-19:00. I have done some adjustments after I made this spoiler-screenshot, so the one, that will be part of the next version will look a little different…

EDIT: made a new screenshot of the newest version

I’m just a little confused about Trevor’s party, I was able to access the party for the first two weeks on Saturday than after that I never get the prompt again, is there something I need to do to get the option every week

I agree, Trevor’s party was kinda confusing till now and no, there is no possibility to re-attend Trevor’s party, you can only go there once. Jane will invite you and you have the possibility to go there every Saturday, until you go. It stops displaying the possibility when you go there.

So this is changing in the new version: Trevor’s Party will now have specific hours on specific days (if you miss them, well you missed them, they will not repeat anymore). Additionally, you can be invited to Trevor’s Party in random events at the college/home again, even if you already went there once.

Will you ever update the free version? I’m curious as to what was added

Here is the thing with the free version:
It takes me 3 days of work time to “create” the free version, because all bugs reported in the free version must be fixed in the free and the newest (= paid) version in order to keep the game’s reputation. It is never a good idea to fix bugs in an outdated version, this just adds unnecessary bug fixing work (and time).

If I do a free version for this month (v0.4) then it will be after the paid version (v0.6), which is planned to be released on January 3rd to all Silver- and Gold-Patrons.

All the money raised through Patreon goes directly back into the game or covers previous costs of the game I had (I don’t earn money with the game, I just try to cover costs). Without my Patrons this game would financially not be possible (all the graphics used in the game are bought from daz3d and are very expensive), so if you like the game you should consider subscribing as this helps me to finance the game (and you get to play the newest versions  )

Am I crazy or do I not see the wine on this chart?
