Discourse has a fairly robust tracking and filtering system, but it is hidden within the user preferences and can be a bit hard to track down. This guide is to explain how to access these preferences so you can set what content to filter or content you would like to be notified about.
Accessing The Tracking Settings
-
Click on your avatar in the upper right corner of the page to bring up the notification and account menu.

-
Click on the profile button at the very bottom of the page to bring up the profile menu
-
Click on the Preferences option to be taken to your user preferences page
-
On the secondary bar look for the tab called
Trackingand click on that to set up your tracking menu
You should be taken to a page that looks like this:
Setting Filters & Notifications
-
Near the bottom of the page you should see something like this where you can set filters and notifications based on categories or tags:
-
To set a tag as muted for example go to the Muted section under tags and begin to type the tag you want to mute:
-
Once you see the tag you want to mute select it from the list and it should appear like the following:
-
Click save changes at the bottom of the page to apply the filter:
Removing Filters & Notifications
To remove a tag or category from a filter:
-
Select the box of what you want to modify. You should get something like this:
-
Select the
xnext to the tag you wish to remove:
if you did it correctly the tag should no longer be in your selected list or in the selection box:
- Click save changes at the bottom of the page to apply the filter:
Some Side Notes
While I suspect the most common use case for this will be to filter content it can also be handy for being notified of specific content you may have interest in. Read the subtext below each selection box for details on what each one does.
It should also be noted, watched topics override muted tags and categories. This allows users to keep an eye on topics of interest regardless of the tag settings. If you wish to have the topic filtered from the feed though you will have to unwatch to the topic.
