Aye, especially annoying when it’s a large passage behind the scenes and what you’re getting in the error is vague at best and there’s no search function inside Twine to quickly navigate the passage to what little info the error message gives.

Hi I wanna raise a concern real quick. Somewhat recently I have learned that “wog” is a slur in some places (Britain and Australia mainly) and thought I should bring it up in case you would find it unfortunate that sheewog and wognip contain the word. I’ve never seen it used as such but it’s apparently enough of a deal that Nintendo renamed the Wollywog enemies from Pikmin to Wollyhops and I’ve noticed YouTube’s autocaptioning blanking out the word (something it does when it thinks a swear has been said) when I watch Pikmin related videos and the author uses the old name.

Just thought I should bring it up. Took a while to even occur to me.

well that is unfortunate to learn. For the record I am an American so for me, I named them Sheewogs as a impromptu of “Banshee” and “Pollywog” (like tadpoles). They’ve been one of my OC species long before I even made this game. This is the first I’ve ever heard of the slur “wog” but obviously I’d rather no one think I’m intentionally including a slur in my game.

I’ve shortened “Sheewog” to “wog” in an affectionate way here or there, but if thats how it reads I’ll at least be removing all individual usages of “wog” and find something else. oof.

I’d say leave things as they are so far as the full names of things go. It’s going a bit far to change words you’ve made up (with only good intentions) because a part of the word could potentially be offensive if taken out of context. As an example of this I give you the town of Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. I think I saw someone try to petition to change its name but it was rejected.

Though yes, perhaps remove the ‘wog’ diminutives. As much as we know in context nothing bad is meant by its use, you never know. Funnily enough I remember the first time I played this and coming across that and having a wee chuckle thinking to myself - “you’re clearly not British if you’re using that.”

Aussie here. ‘Wog’ is pretty much neutered these days as a slur here; it was definitely a slimy thing (pun unintended), but it’s petered out since the 90s as Mediterranean cultures it targeted were no longer in the cross-hairs of racial vilification and the term is mostly reclaimed nowadays. I found it a bit funny honestly, imagining a character from say ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ or ‘Fat Pizza’ in this universe.

Can’t say the same for the UK, but it is what it is.

I love etymology so I find it fascinating that it relates to a different ethnic grouping in Australia. Over here it related to black people and - I’m assuming - shortened from gollywog dolls you used to be able to save up for from saving up marmalade jars and getting the tokens that were printed on the labels. Which were discontinued for reasons. I remember seeing them as a kid and had no idea that it was meant to be a racist depiction of a black person - as far as I knew in my childish naivete it was just a fantasy humanish doll. These days you just don’t hear it. I think my generation are the last that would have known of it and kids today have just never heard the term because we got it drummed into us it was racist.

I suspect what happened is that things split due to the fact we’ve never had a sizeable african population and the stereotypes and appearance of indigenous australians didn’t fit perfectly with that slur. We certainly had golliwog dolls and anti-black racism, it just ended up having different terminology.

As for terms ingame, could always call them ‘gogs’ instead… I think being racist towards fans of Wrexham is still acceptable.

thanks for the input yall. Obviously I’d prefer nothing in my game seem like I’m wittingly using a racial slur, bygone or not. So for now I’ll be changing the pronunciation and changed the plural diminutive forms. I already loan a lot of Irish words in their in lore and culture, so I’ll change it to Sheewóg, like sióg pertaining to the shee part of banshee (bean si).
So, Sheewógen for the plural form, and wógen for the diminutive. Also naming the young wóggles because its cute lol

if this still seems off or like a dogwhistle or such I’ll end up changing it to Sheewag I guess, the “ag” part being like, “hag” since they are swamp witches. Dunno.

Yes actually. It’s not a huge thing, but content with the Meat-Monger will be in the next update ~
There will be some options to attempt to talk with him, and some “feeds you in his bunker” kind of kinky stuff as well as a relevant “bad end”

It’s half implemented right now, so should be done with that soon before I move on to other things in the update.
