I did not enjoy this update compared to the other ones. The same level of love and talent was put into it, but the game was wildly different. Its amazing that you all listened and made the early levels easier. This text will be blurredOriginally, I thought that the exp candies were not enough because I did not realize that the professor had an exp. all (which I did not find until I ran all the way back to the starter town) Its really amazing that you listened to the community on this and I feel that if I took full advantage of it, I would have had a slightly better experience with this update, but because of the lack of clarity, my gameplay boiled down to find the enemy in the update worth the most experience Its Audino btw, it gives like 10x more than anything else in the game even when I am 20+ levels ahead, power level 2 pokemon, and then go into every trainer fight blind, praying they don’t go first and one shot my carry. This strategy seemed to be the only way to play the game as the best pkemn to level against knows toxic AND recover meaning that in order to level pkemn using other means, you either are wasting a ton of time KOing the highest exp pkemn or getting barely experience on easier to beat pkemn.
I really really liked the idea of hidden pkemn such as delibird and was excited when I got a high-ish level pkemn to skip a bit of grind. Out of the 10 times I put this specific pkemn into battle, it was outsped and one-shot by every pkemn it was placed against (usually while 10 or so levels ahead) and the one time it wasn’t, its default nature and moveset is super low accuracy so it missed and died anyways.
As a PSA, there is no safe area (other than the pkestop) between the ocean town and the last town of the update. Which was fine as most of the pkem*n within these regions have x2 or x4 to either psycich, ground, or fire, so as long as you have 2 of those 3 fights, its fine. You can and will be ambushed by wild pokemon everywhere between these 3 towns.
The first new town was probably my least favorite experience ever. I kind of see that it was meant to be some sort of creepypasta/found-footage/horror addition to the game, which could have worked if not for the fact that every fight in the gym could have been skipped and the entire theme was Simpsons themed. The rest of the game was light-hearted interesting dialogue and fat-fetish content, whereas this came out of left field. This glitchy area could have been cooler if after you beat the leader, their true form was revealed and the buggy-mess went back to normal. As it stands, I think this town should just be removed and the two areas it borders just become stapled together.
As for the last town, nothing special. The market would be really cool if there was a better way to make money, but I did think they gym mechanic was pretty cool. Unfortunately, the gym leader was a weird monster thing similar to Dr. Nick in the previous town. If Heart Attown was my least favorite part of this update, both gym leaders not being fattened in the retirement buffet would be my second least favorite. Dr Nick does at atleast show up with a hyper-obese miltank, but the last leader does not even make an appearance.
I am very hopeful for future updates because of a lot of things around the world that seem to be slated for the future. I really enjoyed the new sprites of the pkemn we saw and the areas we moved through besides the glitchy land were very well put together.
Some bugs I found: Milotic has the default back and not the flipped sprite, teleport sends you to the ocean town when used in either of the new towns, fly still doesn’t work, and some missing tiles in the final town.
I want to give a HUGE congradulations to the dev-team for no crashes for the entire playthrough of this update. Thank you so much for working on this game, amazing work so far.
TL:DR
New areas aren’t that exciting or just downright unlikable, new pkemn are amazing looking, grind is getting shorter and moving into the right direction, less bugs and crashes, and last but not least future is looking bright
I give this update a standalone 6/10 due to the gameplay and theme of the new areas being jarring at best, but overall, the game maintains my previous score of 8.5/10 because of the potential it has as well as some fixes to the early leveling experience.
Criticism appreciated as always! I am uploading a version with the tilesets fixed, and the intended reward pictures in the bar.
I figured people might not like this one as much as some of the others, it was really content heavy to make in a lot of places (in particular the secret area in the pine barrens where you can find some neat new pokemon) , but it also was a bit less fetishy than some of the previous ones in terms of the new content, and when we only post one of these every few months I fully understand it can be pretty dissapointing to have the new content be a bit lighter on what you all came for… but on the other hand, I think I and the dev team accomplished what I set out to do with the two areas anyways, maybe it’s just me laughing, but Vegor and Nick were actually two of the earliest ideas for the game, and I found them pretty funny in the way I and the other devs put it together. They’ll probably stay the way they are for now, since I really like them, but if the public decides they really hate it, I might rework it.
As for the grindy stuff, I would strongly recommend the exp all, but in my most recent test playthrough, i haven’t had any trouble with leveling this time around, but I’m still poking around everywhere. At the moment I have a smaller, QoL and feature update planned to come out soon after this current one, which possibly includes changing the EXP yield of all pokemon to be much higher, since I have definitely started seeing the issues with the level spikes people were talking about, in particular on the way to the mountainfoot gym (although much less after that).
Hopefully some of those QoL changes will help out with the stuff you’re talking about, as well as maybe a few learn-level changes (ie audino learns recover later, while delibird maybe learns some more accurate moves sooner)
