Imagine if when you’re around food you’d get a message saying “You smell [insert description based on food] nearby…”
Examples:
“You smell something fresh nearby…” (Vegetable food items)
“You smell something tasty close…” (Food items that add a lot of weight)
“You smell fresh… soup? In a dungeon?” (Soup chest)
Soup Chest Soup Chest Soup Chest I luv Soup Chest
This sounds very good actually, now that I think of it this could be a neat way to add hidden walls and such in the map haha. I have a rough idea of how this could be implemented but probably will also take a good amount of extra time so I’ll try to work on these type of messages after I finish and share the first prototype.
We’re almost there! Right now the code is finally in a state that works well for what I need (without crashing) and so I was able to start working on constructing the maps and I’m close to finish a starting first map. I admit I got a little distracted adding new interactions that have limited use instead of finishing the layout but I believe it will be worth the effort and wait, for example this little interaction when encountering a mini-boss (Small spoiler of the map layout):
I know that not so long ago I said that I wanted to release a prototype with a least two maps finished, but I really underestimated the time it took me to bring the project to a playable state and probably one beta map will do for now anyway. Is it okay to just have this one or should I wait until I have a second one done?
so exciting… this looks lovely! I think one map is more than enough for now!
I’d say give us the first beta map, please!
For a prototype just having the one map should be fine, unless you really want to implement the second map.
Ultimately, it’s your decision. I would appreciate as much content as possible, so 2 maps would be nice.
However, if you feel that you can’t make 2 maps without having to sacrifice something (time, resources, girlfriend-wait, why’d I say that?!) then you should make one BIG map and cram it with goodies. Not too oversaturated so it ruins the experience, but not too barebones so we’re just wandering and battling without any interesting interactions.
I am really happy with the progress shown, and I look forward to whatever you decide!
That looks amazing! i think a second map will be alright for a beta release!
I doubt that there are many people following this thread who would say “No, don’t give us anything to play.” From a more practical viewpoint, though, I would also say that the sooner you can get people play testing, the sooner you can get feedback about bugs, game balance, and other design issues that might need adjusting. It might help you make that second map even better! But in the end, only you can decide when you’re comfortable enough with what you have to share it.
This bro right here spittin’ out facts. Good vibes man, keep it up
That is a really good point, I want to start getting feedback to better tone the experience so I’ll stick to this one map for now and hopefully the next one will be better haha.
I like this idea better! The initial layout wasn’t very big as I prioritized the interactions, but now that those are done I’ll expand a little more the map layout to include as many of the available interactions as possible during exploration. Still I do want to allow combat to take place a lot to know what needs to be changed and rebalanced.
Hmm, since it’s rouge-like I imagined a randomly generated map, but is it a premade map?
The rng map is WIP, so will you just use a premade map for testing for now?
Or will you just make the large dungeon layout, and have entrances, walls and events generated every time the player resets/ enter? That I often see that with 3D rougelike.
I’m looking forward to it, so I don’t mind either way. Actually, I’m worried that the release will be delayed because of what I said.
I considered the rng map route but since this is my first time working in a game I couldn’t figure out a good way to make it work, so instead the idea is to go with the large dungeon layout that works like you say, opening and closing routes and events on every new game and to randomize the level order as well (a similar approach to Devil Spire). tbh I’m still working in the details, but as for now this beta map will only randomize loot and not the layout.
So in layman’s terms it’s a maze you make, but the game changes what paths you can take each run.
Hope you figure it out. The internet and patience could be your friend.
I like how you can crawl in small spaces (provided you’re small enough, obviously, but have you considered making them a bit more obvious? …unless they’re intentionally supposed to be hard to see.
im hope its soon come out soo well can play it
Will there be text options in other languages? (Even if it’s AI-translated text)
I’m currently working with a very simple tileset so that could sometimes make seeing things a bit difficult at first, but I have tried to decorate the floor as much as possible so elements are distinct enough including the crawl spaces. Hopefully that won’t be a big issue, but still I’ll eventually get to work on a bigger and better tileset for the game.
I have it in the “To-Do” list since I actually want to support a few other languages, but that will be a little tricky to do right now. Besides I want to first have a working game before translating it to another language.
A quick update of things. Good news is that I’m already wrapping the game up! I spent this week fixing bugs and tweaking stuff here and there, mostly small issues but still relevant. I’m just making sure everything works well enough, and as long no game-breaking bug is found I will be sharing the prototype by tomorrow.
I also would like to point out that I had to temporarily disable a few underdeveloped features that I thought weren’t important enough to delay the game for, for the same reason there are missing audio and visual effects for moves and spells. All of these things I will address later on.
So far I was looking into sharing it via itch.io, but due to recent events I’m not sure anymore, so instead I’ll use some common sharing service (Probably Drive or Mega), I’m sorry if this causes any inconvenience.
