Thinking out loud: A possible idea for japan nation is that maybe you have to beat them in wars to force them to accept trade with you. Then you can use trade to either cause leader weight gain or to just strengthen your nation generally.

It has been a while since my last update, but I wanted to say that the project is going to be officially on hiatus for a bit (likely until next summer). My graduate program starts soon and I also have to work, so I will not have much time to dedicate to the project until next summer. Thanks for all of the support and encouragement I received from everyone. Hopefully this project can eventually be released for everyone to enjoy.
