Big Aspirations (0.7.4) A weight gain interactive story

Totally off-topic but impressed you created this all in Harlowe (At least, I think it is. I only use Sugarcube). Is the coding very complex? You’ve done a lot in a short amount of time. Looking forward to more.

Thank you to you and everyone else for the suggestions, I want you all to be aware that it is very helpful in giving me ideas for ways to take the gameplay and story. Some of these are very interesting!

I have been using Harlowe yes, as for if the coding is difficult, hard to say? Like I mentioned this is my first time doing any sort of coding, so there are many functions available to me that I don’t know how to properly utilize or just straight up don’t know exsist. I mostly watched some basic tutorials to give me a grasp on the bare essentials and then I’ve been learning as I go, usually googling stuff if I ever get an idea for something I want to implement and how I would go about doing it. I’m sure if someone with the proper know how were to look at the code underneath they would probably shake their head at whatever the hell I’ve come up with.

Love the game can’t wait for updates of it

sugarcube is for coders who want to write a CYOA
harlowe is for writers who want to code a CYOA

IMO

They’re reasonably different, and sugarcube has a lot more coding tutorials online, but that’s because harlowe imo is not targeting the coding community directly.

Good explanation. Newb myself to all this and just started coding/doing Sugarcube recently.

Haven’t used Twine since I first used it in 2014 so learning the ropes again. Don’t mean to derail the thread with this. Just dropping by to say the game’s good. :slightly_smiling_face:

Well. Few thoughts here.

  • A “New Game” button would be nice… i’m buggered if i can reset my game currently.
  • More stages are a given, i’d suggest larger portions at certain stages would be cool (think two dozen donuts instead of just the one or two hotdogs).
  • Being able to take folks to the buffet with you would be a fun addition.
  • As for the Streamer? More in-betweens and other activities might help you pace things better in the long run.
  • More ways than the hotdog vouchers to do things to coworkers would help add variety, such as that random bit of food that you can opt to devour or leave alone.
  • Maybe also something to do with particular passengers on the commute, such as the girl with cute hair, or the bunny eared one, too.

Other than all this, keep going!

Found some time to play through the update, got a couple more bug finds.

  • Strawberries are listed as $1 but charge $2
  • Cheese takes your money but isn’t added to your inventory
  • The option to pass is available after eating a hotdog at any weight stage
  • I never received the hotdog voucher after the eating contest, so I’ve been locked out of all of the workplace NPC content (currently on the 5th weight stage). I did just buy a hotdog the first time the eating contest was available though, might have broken something
  • Stephanie’s 2nd ‘Come Over’ date (on the 5th weight stage) doesn’t have speech colouring for “say ahhh”, assuming by the context it’s meant to be the player saying that

I’m curious to know what ai program you use for the images

Thank you for pointing these out, they will be addressed for the next update. As for the voucher, did you win the eating contest? If you participate in it, but you aren’t gluttonous enough then you will lose the contest and not receive the money or voucher, and you will have to wait to try again at a later weight stage.

I won it, and chose the option to carry on eating. The last time I played I did the same thing and got the voucher, so idk what broke it this time around. I also got the option to eat the Glizzard once afterwards then it disappeared from the hotdog stand after that. Didn’t encounter the right NPC before eating the Glizzard so that might have something to do with it, not sure what its purpose is other than a one-time meal.

If you use the voucher yourself to eat the Glizzard then you obviously can’t give it away later :stuck_out_tongue:

I did the same thing last time and still got the NPC events, maybe that was just a bug that got patched and I wasn’t aware. Either way that’s a pretty useless decision if that is the case, it’s just a one-time 2kg(?) meal that locks off a load of content, which in itself can remain unknown to players if they encounter the right NPCs afterwards like I just did. I think it would be better to just remove the possibility for the player to eat the Glizzard because I didn’t see any way of obtaining another voucher, even after moving up a weight stage and encountering the hotdog stand again. At least with the vials you can use them on the player then get reverted back to how you were previously, but the Glizzard adds no content except for an image of a hotdog, then locks off a bunch of interactions.

Ok but what if I don’t want the office coworkers to get fatter and would rather take the free weight gain from using the voucher on the PC?

More options is good, just don’t use it on yourself if you thinks it’s a waste.

This is such a non-issue to get worked up about.

What if RNG dictates that I don’t meet these NPCs before I see the option to eat the Glizzard? A new player would never know that option even exists, let alone be able to choose between fattening the NPCs or the PC. This is very much possible as I’ve just explained that exact sequence playing out for me. Twice. Sure, I know now that there’s a specific sequence I’m supposed to follow to unlock this content, but for anyone playing for the first time there’s no way of them knowing that.

The effect on the PC is negligible too, a 2kg gain (if I’m remembering correctly) is the equivalent of 2 dozen donuts. It doesn’t even give you more weight than you can normally gain in a day, like the scrolls do. If this were a choice between two branching paths (with subtle text hinting that it’s a one-or-the-other deal) where you could fatten the NPCs or (for example) unlock an extra fattening route for the PC then I wouldn’t have an issue with it. In fact that just adds more replayablility. But for it to be a choice between extra content and no content removes any worth behind letting the PC eat it.

Good game, cant wait till save is added,so I have time to fully explore.

Fair enough.

I don’t really want the option removed, but making it a more attractive option is a good idea. You’re right in that 2kg isn’t much in the grand scheme of things.

Buffing the number and maybe providing a passive benefit similar to the amulet or just some art instead of a hotdog would would go a long way.

This is a totally valid point, and it has given me an idea for something, hehehe
