I think the problem here is that most of my equipment comes from old patches, hence why my (old) shield is “stuck” (can’t unequip it). But on the other hand I can still have one more shield which gives me some extra protection ;D
Edit: looks like it’s a more general thing, managed to equip two more.
I ran a query to unequip every shield in the game. Not really sure the reason why it was bugged like this, though I’m sure it had something to do with a previous patch since I could only replicate it on my older character. Looks like it’s working fine now.
What browser are you using? Some bugs only affect certain browsers.
Yeah, my character is quite old, same applies for most stuff in my inventory. Looks like it’s working fine now, indeed.

Looks like this isn’t fixed yet, just replicated it on my character. I’ll have to take a closer look when I get home from work.

You could actually do that in an older version of Dwarf Fortress because of a bug
