Dungeon of the Devourer - 0.7.3

Seems like your having a hard time, here’s some tips so that skills have less of an issue:

  1. Keep upgrading your gear
  2. Chub Town can be used to rest and buy new stuff.
  3. Look around for secret chests or items, there’s plenty
  4. Special skills are you big damage dealers. Magic is helpful in-between using Specials
  5. Absolutely abuse being immobile to do more damage
  6. Guard gives you TP, use it to defend and unleash a big attack
  7. Escape will always succeed.
  8. Know your elemental weaknesses. Fat will resist Physical Attacks, but Slime will do more damage to Fat.
  9. Dont forget to update your game! Lots of new fixes and stuff with each patch

Other than that, this is probably the best advice I can give you. I understand your frustrations, but please try these things out. Please only report any new issues, I think I understand you loud and clear about your problems.

ok, I’ll keep that in mind when the broken stairs and doorways are fixed and I can progress

Can you elaborate on that? Screen shots will help

I posted them earlier.

Oh is there an order to them? I never would have guessed!

Ah yes, you have to press the interact button for these, but they should be on touch. Will fix in the next update.

The order doesn’t matter. But if you get fat while on the rune, it doesn’t trigger. You have to be fat while stepping on to it. It’s a problem that bothers me, but havent found a nice fix for yet

It seems to be the case for all the belly slam-openable entryways I’ve come across, like in the mines, so you might want to go through them all, just in case.

Maybe I’m missing something, or I’m just horribly underleveled, but the dragon boss fight seems very poorly designed. Every single one of her attacks hits the whole party for nearly half their health. If one member ever goes down the fight is practically over, as the one remaining will have to waste their turn reviving the other, after which the dragon will do another full party attack and kill either one or both of them again. Top it off with a ridiculous amount of HP and 3 full phases (that I’ve seen so far) and I don’t really see how you’re meant to win this.
I was dreading fighting the Potato after seeing the other guy complain about it so much but that thing was a cakewalk compared to this brick wall. I can only assume I’m meant to go somewhere else, but the slime specifically said to go here.

Hello, Unable2Win, I’m sorry you’re unable to win against Karia’rashi. She is a fairly challenging fight, you’ll need to be at least LVL 6 and have decent armor to survive her Ass Quake attacks. Her Attack and Magic stat might be over tuned, but the fight is designed to also counter Fatten and Immobile states with Fire damage. I recommend using Belly Slam to absolutely destroy her.

I see what you did there lol.
Both my characters are currently level 8 and have at least one piece of the strongest armor available equipped. I understand wanting to have a counter against the fattened status, but I don’t think having every single one of her attacks be able to hit the whole party is a good pairing with that. Especially since fire damage already wreaks Jill’s HP regardless of what form she’s in. She can also force the party into the fat status anyways, which of course hits both at once, meaning they’ll both have to waste a turn digesting to get back to skinny to avoid massive damage. I’m willing to give Belly slam a whirl, but that doesn’t seem like the obvious answer given that: 1.) You have to be fat in order to use it, putting you at risk of heightened damage, and 2.) it costs a hefty chunk of the already very limited MP pool, meaning you’ll have to waste another turn regening it, giving the boss a free turn to destroy half the party’s total HP again.

I want to be clear that I’m not complaining about it being hard. I’ve played other RPGmaker games with bosses way more difficult than this (LISA, Black Souls, Fear and Hunger, Hylics) but the key difference is that I felt like I was properly equipped to handle those challenges, and those hard fights were closer to mid or endgame, or entirely optional. And it was fair as well as hard. This is the 3rd boss of the game after the tutorial Paladin and the big potato. The party consists of only two characters, and every ability at my disposal also has some downside that will just end up making the fight harder. It also feels like it has way to much going on for such an early boss as well. This boss:

  1. Has the majority of her attacks hit the entire party making it very difficult to both heal and attack, making it both a drag and a drain on resources.
  2. Can force the entire party into a state that makes them more vulnerable to her primary damage, which is already effective against one party member.
  3. Is fast enough that she can spam these party wide attacks before you can revive and heal, making the fight over if a character ever goes down.
  4. Can heal and buff herself at the same time, making her even more damaging and drawing out the fight even longer.
  5. Has a shitload of HP and 3 phases.

This seems a bit excessive for only the 3rd boss, no? I’d recommend altering some or all of the above things to make it more balanced for the player. My strongest recommendation would be to make most of her party wide attacks single target instead, as I feel that would ease the difficulty to the point where it’s fair but still challenging. As a side note, I decided to give up and go explore the forest area a bit, and found the enemies in that area to be way easier than the ones in the flesh temple. Yet Jill tells you to go to the flesh temple first, which feels backwards to me. You may want to consider swapping the order you do these areas in, or changing Jill’s advice.

To end on a happier note, outside of this hiccup I have been enjoying the game so far. The character art and interactions are nice and I can tell there’s a lot of heart and effort put into this. There’s a really good game here, the combat system just needs a few tweaks to make it all click together. I encourage you to keep up the good work as the experience has been primarily enjoyable so far.

Thanks for the feedback

There is some disconnect right now in terms of game “flow”, as it progresses in development. The concept is an open world style progression. Jill suggesting to go to the Seal of Flesh was added when that was the only place to go. In the completed game, the idea is that you can go to any of the 4 zones and do the early areas there.

For now, I have tweaked and reduced the overall attack power of Kariarashi. She’ll still have her abilities and kit, I want her to feel like a big powerful dragon. I did some play testing with starter gear and I think it is possible.

Hopefully this help! When in doubt trust in the Belly Slam! It only costs TP!

Thanks for taking my rambling into consideration. Didn’t realize Belly slam was TP instead of MP, I must have misread that. I think some of my concerns regarding damage risk still apply, but I’ll give it a shot and see how it goes.

I would still heavily recommend cutting down on the number of full party attacks as that’s the part that really feels annoying to me at least. Or if you don’t want to remove the attacks there are some other ways to deal with it. Instead of removing the full party attacks you could give her more single target moves to expand her overall attack pool and reduce the chances of her spamming full parties back to back. You could also make it so that she only starts using the full party hits in the 2nd or 3rd phases instead of right off the bat, which would also give some more variety to the phases as well. You’re the dev though, and I’m just throwing out ideas here, so if you think the damage reduction covers it, then I’ll just wait and see how it turns out.

Best of luck with development going forwards!

You can find it within the Seal of Wind! There is a “chapel” within the dungeon with a big red rock. Interact with it to get where you need to go
