Expansionary Whims - A Very WIP Inflation-focused Adventure Game (Prologue Complete)

Introduction

Hi, over the past few months I’ve been working on a fetish RPG Maker game in my free time. The focus is on the story, so there’s no combat at the moment, and probably won’t ever be. I’m also primarily a writer, not an artist (in fact, I only started drawing earlier this year), so the presentation is going to be a bit rough around the edges. Regardless, it’s now in a state where I feel comfortable sharing it with others. Currently, the playtime is 30 minutes to an hour, covering the prologue to the main story.

Synopsis

Follow a detective and his rather heavy sidekick(?) as they try to figure out who’s behind the recent spate of inflations rocking their city. They may also come across several other incidents along the way, perhaps related, perhaps not.

Fetishes

The fetishes contained within the game at present are inflation and expansion. Weight gain (along with stuffing) is planned, but not currently implemented.

I’d like to extend special thanks to chugachugs, whose game The Abugida Effect was a major inspiration for me. I’d also like to thank the members of his Discord server who playtested an earlier build of Expansionary Whims, and whose feedback gave me the confidence to proceed with a wider release.

I hope you enjoy.

Looking forward to future victims of the Inflator–I mean, I-I hope this case gets tied up quickly before the leads float away…

The writing is pretty good and the project as a whole shows promise! Inflation isn’t my thing; but the case itself was interesting and the humor was great!

Hi all, I think it’s about time I posted an update here. It’s been two weeks since release, no major issues have been reported, and the feedback I’ve received has been positive. Which is good! I think! Anyway, after a break I’ve started working on the game again in earnest, so I thought I’d provide a brief summary of what’s to come.

Short Term

Currently I’m focusing my efforts on what will effectively be a continuation of the prologue, intended to bridge it and the next portion of the game. Depending on how long it ends up being I may release it as its own update, or save it to release later with more substantial content. Like what’s been released so far it’s going to be mostly linear, introducing a couple new characters and plot beats.

Mid Term

This is when I’ll hopefully finally start getting to the meat of the game. The plan is that you’ll control either Limmet or Sierill and follow their separate investigations into the Inflator case. You’ll be to choose which branch you follow first (although only one will likely be available on the initial release), and depending on how difficult it ends up being I may implement the option to swap between them at any time. The game world will also open up slightly, allowing you to revisit past locations to initiate side quest and other activities.

Long Term

Not much to say here, except that I have vague plans to overhaul the default RPGMaker tile sets and other assets to achieve a more consistent art style. I’ll also probably make some other improvements here and there, but my main focus right now is on introducing new content.

Anyway, that’s all for now. As a thank you for following along, have a teaser for an upcoming character whose appearance may appeal to those with more traditionally weighty sensibilities.

I wonder who she is...

The update is out, and just in time for my birthday! The new content should amount to ~20 minutes, rounding out (heh) the prologue to the story. In it, you’ll find answers to such fascinating questions as:

  • How much does Sierill weigh, really?
  • What happens when a cop eats too many doughnuts?
  • This is a mystery game, isn’t it?

I’ll probably be laying low and focusing on making minor adjustments to the prologue (as well as bugfixes, of course) for the foreseeable future. When I do get around to the next major update, though, I’m looking for some feedback.

As I’ve alluded to previously, the next portion of the story is going to consist of two separate branches following Limmet and Sierill’s portion of the investigation respectively. The intention is for the player to be able to choose which one they want to do first, but in the interests of getting content into your hands as quickly as possible I’ll likely be releasing each portion as a standalone update.

So, my question to you is: Which of the abovementioned routes would you be interested in seeing first?

Edit: Oh yeah, I suppose I should mention that this release comes bundled with a save made right before the new content for those who don’t want to replay everything.

I’ve finished the full prologue now, very fun and interesting! I loved the new sprites for inflated Garcilla in the park and Mala looks nicely jiggly as well. The spritework has already gotten better and the writing remains punchy and sharp in this investigation.

I vote Sierill’s section first! :smiling_face_with_horns:

Just finished the prologue, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the game goes! The dialogue’s fun, the art is cute (good GOD the double wide wobble wagon Mala’s packin (bars?!)), and the twists keep me wantin more! Please continue!!!

And I vote for Sierill’s section to come next! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
