Food For Thought: A Simon-Says WG game! (v.0.1 Out Now!)

FFT gif

Hey all! After being a lurker for a good few years and working up my coding and art skills, I finally came up with an idea for a WG game! Food For Thought!

It’s a Simon-Says WG game where you follow the sequence and the character grows with each success. The game is still receiving updates so be sure to check back every once and a while!

Feel free to give the game a try in browser or download it here! —> itch.io

DO BE WARNED: The browser version may run slower than the downloadable version. If you experience slowdown, give the windows version a try.

FAQ!

Q: Will the full game only feature female characters?
A: In the game portion of the game, yes, but for story side-characters I do plan on having male characters.

Q: Will the full game only feature furry characters?
A: Nope! I only plan to have two furry female characters in the game. Q was just the character I felt the most comfortable drawing at the moment so I wanted her to be the starter character (along with her being my personal fav OC).

Q: When will the full game be released?
A: Whenever it’s finished! I only work on it in my free-time so it could be a while, but I do plan on updating with posts here when big portions of the game are done such as when a character and their chapter are finished.

Q: Do you plan on updating the game with each chapter?
A: I do!

For those playing through the browser: no action should be required! Each update will apply when they’re pushed out.

For those playing on Windows:

    1. Download the latest Update_v.x.x.x.zip file from the itch .io page.
    1. Unzip the file. There will be a file named TAS.tpatch inside.
    1. Place TAS.tpatch in the main directory of the game (where FFT.exe is located).
    1. Start the game and click on the green button when you see a prompt.
    1. The game should automatically patch and reboot.

Q: Do you plan on having the game in multiple languages?
A: I sadly do not. Multiple language support isn’t a thing with TyranoBuilder so, any translations for the game would have to be done by hand and, with myself being the only developer, that would eat away at a lot of time. Who knows though, that could change in the future!

Q: I found a bug!
A: Ah! Sorry about that! Feel free to DM me here on the forums about your bug!

Q: Do you encourage modding of the game?
A: Of course! I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE to see any mods for the game! Feel free to send them my way or post them here in the forum! While not confirmed yet, I do plan on having a YCH cutout specifically for this purpose!

Q: Why use TyranoBuilder to make this game?
A: It’s all I know. I am not built for proper coding…

Q: Why are there some words with random capitalization?
A: Secrets, secrets, secrets, secrets.~

Interesting concept so far, only thing I have to say so far on it, is that the character available at start looks more like a yeti than a rabbit

That’s a new one for Q XD But thank you very much! It’s great to know people like my silly little idea so far! <3

good day, I would like to say that I liked the Demo (and I will praise it separately for the ability to choose the difficulty, it was more interesting for me on the difficult level), but I would like to mention a couple of comments

  1. as mentioned above, the character looks like a yeti than a rabbit, not critical but I think it was worth mentioning
  2. a more critical problem is that on Win, you have rewind, which complicates the translation (I was only able to superficially translate what the plot is about), of course there is a solution to take a screenshot, you can just click on another screen, but it is not very convenient
otherwise I enjoyed playing, I wish you success in your project and I am waiting for updates)

Thank you very much! It’s great to hear you enjoyed the demo!

I’ll be honest, I never even thought about a translation of the game! The engine I’m using to build the game doesn’t have any translation option put into it. The only way to push out different languages for the game would be to write and build them myself which would eat away at a lot of development time. More than likely, the game will stay in English only unless there’s enough demand or someone is willing to help me on language support.

I apologize that this is more than likely not the answer you were looking for, but it’s a great insight to have and to keep in mind going forward! I’ll add it to the FAQ for now.

I don’t mind that you only make the game in English, it’s your right, the problem is simply in manual translation, by the player himself, who doesn’t know English well (for example, me), usually I just didn’t have such a problem, and I decided to mention it, if somehow it is possible to remove the rewind from the win button, that would be good

Oh, I got’cha! I can do that for the next build of the game with no problems at all (whenever that may be). Thank you for the suggestion and letting me know it may interfere with other things I had no idea about!

This game looks interesting, thought about making it viable for mobile devices?

I have not, no! Seemed odd to me to have a game with this kind of gameplay and subject matter on one’s phone. XD

TyranoBuilder does have mobile support (even though it’s not very well documented in English), but as I use a Windows PC, building the game for IOS (or Mac PC’s for that matter) isn’t possible. As for Android phones, it would be possible, but would require some tweaking of files and a bit more research. If I ever decide to sit down and get an android version working, I’ll post here about it!

On a second note; a quickfix version of the demo has been pushed out! Sorry to all who lost in the story mode and were promptly robbed of the story. Bad coding on my part, but that is now fixed!

  • Swapped the “Skip Text” function from ctrl and windows key to “z” (Thank you, Dapk_Macmep!)
  • Fixed a bug where retrying from the story mode put the player in the Ch. Select version of the game

To know if you’re running the windows quick-fix version, go to the Controls tab in the Options; it should now show Z as the skip button. If it doesn’t, please download the windows version again!

good time again, thanks for listening, now at least I’m more aware of the story, along with this I decided to look for the capital letters that were scattered in the story mode (on hard, because it’s more interesting), and I think I found them, I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I got RGUS.
I also completed free mode on all difficulties, it was nice to return to the character, I’m waiting for the update with impatience)

Haha, aww! Thank you for playing the demo again! The reception so far has been really great and I can’t thank everyone enough for all of your kind words!

As for the secret, you’re close! I’ll give a hint: It will be seven letters in total.

I have great news! I now have a successful way to update both the browser version and the Windows version of the game! As I complete a chapter, I will push out an update to both!

(Disclaimer: no update yet, but work has begun on the second chapter! This is simply news for the future.)

For those playing through the browser: no action should be required!

The main .zip of the game will be updated with each new version too, but at this moment it’s unclear if re-downloading the game each time will keep your old save files and progression, so I only recommend downloading the main .zip for newcomers to the game.

Thank you one more time for all of the support so far! I’m incredibly grateful! As of now, I still can’t promise regular updates on a consistent basis; this is a project I’m working on when I feel like it AND have the time to do so. With that said, I want to give a small list of things that I do plan on having in the full game. This is not an exhaustive list and could change as work on the game continues:

  • Ten main characters, each with a chapter in the story of the game.
  • A YCH cutout character for those wanting to put their own OC’s (or non-OC’s) in the game.
  • Bonus images for completing a character on all three difficulties.
  • A Hardcore difficulty with only one life.

I also encourage any and all feedback or suggestions for things to be put into/changed about the game! Thank you one more time for playing my demo and I hope everyone enjoys the game as its being worked on!

thanks for the tip, so far, because of the pleasant music and the equally pleasant bunny, I don’t get tired of going back (I think the difficult mode played a big role for me personally), there was one moment of my inattention, when I saw after The there is a capital letter, I thought that it should be like that, until today I noticed that in fact it is not correct, I have CRSUGUS for now, if this is still not it, then I will continue searching, while I am interested in it

I’m really glad you enjoy my silly little game so much, Dapk!

You’re just one letter away from the secret! Here’s two more tips: There’s only one S in the key word (which IS a made up word & a reference to the visual novel “Dialtown”). Once you have the word, enter it in the name field (with only the first letter capitalized, like you would a name).

in many ways I continue to play for two reasons

  1. although the game is small, everything is still good in it and because of this I get sincere pleasure from the game
  2. I try to make games myself, and I wanted my players to also get pleasure from the time spent with the game, as I am now with yours

thank you for helping with this secret, I myself probably would not have been able to guess about all this (at least because I am hearing Dialtown for the first time)
of course I entered this word several times, and even went through the game again, in case the secret continues

if you are interested in hearing ideas about the future hardcore difficulty, I can suggest adding a timer, 20 seconds, which at the beginning (yes, exactly at the beginning) of the thought display will moderately cut off, so this will add tension, where it will be necessary to not pay attention to it (the player may well be tense at the very thought of time running out and that he has no right to make a mistake) and logically update after each correct combination

thank you for making this small pleasant game, and now I can calmly wait for the update)

It’s really great to hear you got sincere pleasure from the game! I’m so incredibly thankful to everyone who has enjoyed the game!

As much as I agree that a timer would add a lot of tension and difficulty, it was actually something I already tried and couldn’t get working how I wanted it to. I’m open to other suggestions to add difficulty though!

just a couple of sentences

  1. copies, for example, chocolate cake and truffle, you will need to remember not just the shape of the object (which I did at all three difficulty levels, where difficult is essentially considered average, as for me) but also its color

  2. the 5th element that you will need to remember, sounds insignificant, but this fifth element, after the previous difficulties, can make you tense up

Work on the first update for the game is going extremely well, and it’ll be one that introduces a lot of features! Here’s a list of ones that will be included with it:

  • A new Character and a new chapter!
  • Chapter select! Start your save from chapter 2 or later as chapters are added! You will need to unlock the chapter first to start a save from it.
  • Critical difficulty! Try out a faster six-food sequence with no room for error! One wrong click and it’s game over! Unlock special scenes as you beat each Critical difficulty level too! These scenes will be unlocked through a new “Extras” menu!
  • The ability to unlock new characters through Character Select AND the story! (For those just wanting a good time, not a long time~)
  • Bonus images that will be unlocked with each character!
  • A jukebox to listen to the music of the game. Tracks will unlock as you unlock new characters (All music featured in Food For Thought is from pixabay.com and each track is credited to the rightful creator from the site in the jukebox).
  • A new splash-screen and the main menu portrait will gain new characters as you progress!
  • And general tweaks here and there!

The time-frame for this new update coming out should hopefully be either this coming weekend or next week; I will update here if this time-frame needs to be pushed back.

This will be probably the biggest update I make to the game as I plan for each following update to only add a new chapter and character + everything that comes with a new character (3 bonus images, adding their track to the jukebox, special scene unlocked via Critical mode, etc.). The YCH character will be included in one of these updates.

Before pushing out the update, I also want to get a public opinion. Food For Thought will remain a free game with each update, start to finish. However, how does a paid Patreon sound to those wanting a little extra?

Tier 1 would be $1/month and would include behind the scenes wips/.psd files and devlogs (and my gratitude!!). Tier 2 would be $5/month and include all of Tier 1 + a monthly patreon exclusive image (could be SFW or NSFW), having your username in the credits of the game, and early test builds days before official updates are pushed out. Feel free to vote in the poll below and give other suggestions for the patreon!

  • Yes, a Patreon would be great!
  • No, a Patreon wouldn’t be great!

Do keep in mind that the Patreon, if made, would be a limited-time thing as I do plan on there being a final update to FFT. Once that final update is pushed (and possibly hotfixed), that will be the cut-off to get your name into the game. After the final update too, tier 1 would be disbanded and tier 2 would be left with the only benefit being the monthly art piece which I plan to continue to make after FFT. If made, the Patreon will be available when the next update releases.

Lastly thank you all one more time for the extremely warm reception to this silly idea I had one morning. I hope you all continue to enjoy the game as updates are released!

Version 0.1 is now released!! Head to the itch io page here to try it out! If you encounter any bugs, please DM me so it can be fixed ASAP!

Since majority said no, the Patreon will not be created, but for those who do still want to support me, doing so through itch is still incredibly helpful and appreciated! Thank you to all who have enjoyed and played FFT and I hope you enjoy the new update and all future ones!

A hotfix has been pushed out! For those playing on windows, please download the update at your earliest convenience!

Hotfix v.0.1.1

  • Added a “Reroll” button to reroll your food sequence! This button has been added to all four difficulties and there are no downsides to using the reroll. This addition may be changed or removed if there is demand for it.
  • Changed the Main Menu, Tutorial, and end-story music due to copyright issues
  • Changed Critical Mode to be easier (slowed sequence speed and sequence will stay on screen until finished like Easy difficulty)
  • Fixed some bugs in Kara’s Medium difficulty

Thank you all for your help, patience, and support! I am a first time dev working on this game in my free-time so big bugs may go completely unnoticed!
