How many users are making games? (Poll)

Hey.

I am the poll goblin.

Here is a another poll to scratch my curiosity itch. Sorry for the lack of presentation on this one. Hopefully these will be clear enough on their own.

The timing is a little unfortunate, so disregard the Gain Jam for a moment

  • Most of them align with my preferences
  • Few of them align with my preferences
  • Somewhere in the middle

  • I don’t have time
  • I don’t want to engage with one of the areas of development myself (coding/art/animating/sound)
  • My ideas need me to do more research/exceed my capabilities/are too ambitious

You reached the end! Congrats

I’m curious as to what the spread for these will be. The distribution of separate proficiencies among the userbase could be interesting.

I have my game in mind. I’m just hung up by starting it off. The same goes for a long comic I have in mind.

“How do you feel about the popular/recent playable videogames here on the forum?” - there should also be an option that I didn’t like any game that came out recently.

Oops, I completely overlooked that being a possibility lol
I think choosing the Few option or not voting at all will still give good info, i’m curious as to how many others feel the same way

Very interesting, I’m glad I made the distinction in the drawing polls
In hindsight maybe I should have done the same with 3D modeling

Been fiddling with a game off-and-on for… sheesh, a good chunk of the year now. It’s a table-top game, so it’s more of a game-book (or… rule-book for a game?) than an actual game itself. Uncertain how that would be categorized, but I suppose it counts.

It’s slowly become more generic and universal in scope as I’ve designed it, so I’m uncertain whether I’m going to just release it as a “general solo role-playing system” with the understanding that you CAN play to your fetishes in it or whether I’m going to complete the full system as written, release that, and then come back and pare it down to be more specifically fetish-focused for an alternative release. I feel like some games being developed here do wind up that way - the developer goes “hey, this is turning out to be a good game and I’m intentionally cutting the audience to a tiny fraction by putting fetish material in” and so they strip out the kink stuff for wider market access. I know of at least one game here that wound up like that, and I think there were some others where the same thing happened.

As far as I’m concerned tabletop games do count, although my polls may not reflect that…

I do vaguely remember a game ending up going the “clean” route mid-development, but I can’t tell which one it was.
That’s an interesting phenomenon, like while people try to think of settings that work for the fetish it ends up working well on its own, and at that point after that realization the dev is satisfied enough with their work to set it free to the world or to get compensation from the wider market maybe?

Idk where I’m going with this but it’s cool

Never played a TTRPG solo before. How does it usually work?

Never played a TTRPG solo before. How does it usually work?

It’s pretty simple, honestly. If you think about all the encounter tables and loot tables and such in really complex multi-sourcebook games like D&D, or modern “rules light” games which try to let players have direct impacts on world-building as a way of reducing GM burden, it’s just taking that a step further. The “plot” questions are answered by rolls on a table or “oracle” system (giving the equivalent of writing prompts to help you come up with unexpected/novel things for you to play with), which leaves you as the player to define how characters respond to those events/outcomes. This is a good primer which goes a bit more in-depth on it.

Depending on the game, it can vary from something which is very much a “rogue-like” in design (randomly-generated hostile land with encounters and treasures determined via tables, heavily dungeon-crawling-and-combat-focused) to something which is more of a narrative writing exercise (very few rules, more about presenting a unique experience than a challenge). Technically they also make “solo engines” that are designed to make stuff like World of Darkness, Pathfinder, and so on and so forth soloable too.

Hope this helps!

Found myself clicking 0-3 for every category. I use RPG Maker 2003 to make Earthquake Warriors RPG, which is a super easy program to use. My spritework’s not great, and while I have some decent animations made for a couple characters, they aren’t in the game.

I was a game developer ever since I was a young child (around 9) and continued up until several months ago when I quit (9 total years experience) because it was just no longer what I enjoyed doing. I was pretty good at it too, probably an 8-10 in most things like programming, 3D modeling, game design, and all that, but it’s just not the job for me. I want to create something in real life with real people, but so far that’s just a distant dream in a world where you can’t even own your own home if you’re poor.

I’m actually working on a game based on Cookie Clicker I’ll only have time to work on it it’s still early days but I’ll let you all know when I’m ready Also I’m using scratch because it’s easier for me and I’d like to contribute to the community at least by leaving my name.

Don’t feel bad for that, I think we shouldn’t expect to be 4-6+ in more than a couple things anyway.
On that note, if you have a lot of interest in something but isn’t very proficient at it yet you can select 4-6, like it’s averaging the 7-10 interest with the current 0-3 proficiency, that’s why I mentioned one “or” the other

I haven’t played your game yet but from what you said you could easily select 4-6 in both the drawing poll and the animation one, or even writing

I can relate to that, although I never got to the point were I considered myself a 7 before realizing it wasnt for me lol
Some things just take too long to realize that

Hope you succeed on what you are pursuing!
(9 yo dev thats impressive)

Idle clickers do peak my interest :eyes:
Good luck on your project mate, i’ve seen people do really cool stuff with scratch

I’m currently trying to make a side scrolling shmup about body inflation and popping. I’m making all the animations and pixels, but trying to learn the coding and everything. It’s rough…
