Alrighty, so I got character 1 who can do both up-close Melee attacks & far away Ranged attacks, Character 2 who mostly does Melee attacks, & Character 3 who mostly does Ranged attacks.
Now while I know how to make a type of enemy who can only be damaged by ranged attacks, those being flying enemies who can fly away from the range of an axe but not escape the range of an arrow or magic shot.
The question is how do I do the same effect for the up close & personal Melee side, what is the best way to make something only damagable to Melee attacks while being immune to Ranged attacks?
By the way here’s how you could expect combat to look within a simpler format in regards to normal enemy or Mini Boss encounters. The main battle environment will present the field like most rpg battles with your player characters on the left & enemies on the right…or no wait, that’s probably just Deltarune who does that.
While Boss encounters who’ll take place at the end of each world will feature a different end of road format where you must take on this giant dangerous opponent who looks down upon your cast, they are the main opponent who will end the battle upon defeat while the smaller side threats will only be distractions (small-time offensive brutes) or annoyers (defensive boosts or healers) meant to stall out the fight that the big guy could call as back up.
It would depend on the setting, but both modern bulletproof vests and old timey gambesons are more resistant to bullets/arrows than they are knives/swords, so the range immune enemies could simply be wearing armor of those types. For sci-fi you could use the dune energy shields that cannot protect against melee but can protect against range because of the attacks different speeds.
Oh yeah, I guess it would be more of a fantasy setting for what I’m doing. The mansion (the building you explore that drags people from the real world into another dimension) is filled with all sorts of environments that could bend reality to its own desires.
Last night I thought about using slimes though they probably wasn’t the best option I could use since other games showed them being weak to stuff like magic, but for this I was thinking they could absorb magical attacks & smaller projectiles into thier elemental bodies while Melee attacks are the only thing that can cause thier bodies to slip apart due to the overall force you need to throw into such an attack, my examples being swinging down a wand, axe, or knee onto the opponent.
They could also work into shields & armors with the non-living substance.
Though again, this may not be the best options, so for anyone else who may want to try this idea for RPG combat, what other suggestions would you provide?
A gambeson + a tower shield sounds like a good anti ranged option then (the shield being large and good cover against arrows and such, but too cumbersome for efficient melee use)
Slimes sound like a great anti magic enemy, something alive partially or fully due to magic acting as a sponge against magical attacks
