Larger Folk - Work in Progress Fat / Weight Gain Mod For Caves of Qud

it’s unlikely that i’ll implement it, but if it does happen at all it will be extremely rare since i’m not very interested in it either, it’s just not the main focus here. idk about toggleable, i’d have to research if something like that is possible

well a easy way to set it “if x is turned off dont show this ever”

Well, that’s definitely easy to say, but it’s rarely that simple with this sort of thing. Easiest way would probably be to just make it a separate mod file. I’m not sure if Qud has a config menu like that for mods, and I’m not sure if it has a way for turning on and off loaded content like that implemented.

i checked it out after the message where i wondered about it and it’d totally be doable thru various means, but if there’s something like that that’s a whole separate mod or toggle switch for one tiny inflation effect i probably just won’t add it at all, more trouble than it’s worth to me. i’ll leave the inflation stuff to someone who’s properly into that kinda stuff who will do it justice, for now it’s just not on the docket

darn… oh well atleast i tried

eh it’s just the kind of mod where i’m only making it for fun, and i’ve got enough of my own ideas i’m probably not gonna have the patience to implement without trying to put in kinks i’m not interested in.
again, just someone who’s really into it should be the one to make that mod and really do it justice!!

The sprites look amazing!
This mod makes me wonder if there’s a possibility for modding in cursed equipment and curses…

(also seeing this post made me get the game cause it looked cool, and I do not regret it)

i was thinking that too! i think its totally possible, there’s already equipment in the game that can’t be removed, i think it’d be fun to have an identify-cursed-items mechanic i love that kind of thing

oh i’m realizing now you probably meant cursed armour that makes you fat, maybe!! i feel like once it actually starts having an effect you’d just grow out of it, unless it grows with you in which case i’d have to implement some kind of crazy cursebreaking mechanic… i’ll think about it, it’s a toughie, more so designwise than codewise

I will say, quick progress update:

  • 163 custom sprites now, my pace has slowed down a lot, it’s really sinking in how many damn enemies there are in this game lol. We’ll see how it goes.
  • A dynamic weight gain system has been implemented where eating food items adds calories that increase your weight stage, you can lose weight by walking around while hungry or famished. There are some kinks to work out, it doesn’t work with eating food at the campfire yet, and it doesn’t work on creatures without a stomach, like plants or robots, i’ll have to think of a way for them to get fat, plants could just slowly get fat in sunlight, but then it’s just a non system, they all get fat… Robots don’t actually need fuel or food of any kind, so i’d have to think of something weird lol.
  • Based on weight stage you can get stuck in doors, break chairs, and outgrow armour. The outgrowing armor is really simple right now, i’ll have to massage it into a proper design. There’s an idea in my mind of armor having certain sizes or being able to be resized to fit the current weight stage, but that seems like it would just add a massive layer of annoyance that wasn’t there before. May be removed, if I can’t find a way to make it fun. The 1000 cuts of minor negative weight interactions will be a problem, even if there are positives. Positive things are often only useful for a certain build or playstyle, whereas the negatives annoy everyone who has to deal with it!
  • It would be extremely tedious to implement for everyone, but I got it working for creatures to use different sprites depending on weight stage. We’ll see if i have the patience to go through with it lol

Well, even if not, I would be more than happy with what you already have done. So, no pressure at all.

On the topic of robots you could go for something like cybernetics or augments that did such things? Or you could also go for overcharging batteries.

Either way! Super interested in whatever you come up with.

maybe a bundle of microbots that “upgrade” the robot periodically?

not entirely sure what you mean by this, in a systems sense, like what this would actually entail

my brain is blanking on the original idea, I am sorry

Do you think that maybe we could get the unfinished WIP version to play around with?

here you goooo, the first release of larger folk!
I wanted to wait until it was something I could be pleased with before I released it, but that might take a while and ppl want it now. So enjoy this early version of it! It contains a ton of fat sprites and some funny interactions, dynamic weight gain can be enabled in the options but is off by default, since I can’t be 100% confident it works correctly. Remember to enable it before starting a new save if you want to use it!

so to install it its simply add the mod to your mod folder? (first time modding this game so asking to be sure)
