Hey, I posted here a while ago about deciding to start making fat pixel art, and now I’ve been doing that for a-bout a year, and I’ve been kicking around fat game ideas. Instead of making those, I got Insanely into Caves of Qud, and what started as an animal desire to draw a fat edit of the Marshtaur became “Oh, I could probably make a real mod for this.” So! I’ve been making a fat mod! For now, the minimum viable product I’d be pleased with is a sprite replacement mod that just makes everyone fat, and alters their descriptions to reflect this. I’ve gotten 120 of the ~400 (jesus) unique creature sprites in the game done, and almost all the starter characters done. Implementing new conversations is also pretty easy, and there’s some silly stuff you can see if you talk to certain story npcs. Pie in the sky, I’ve had some limited success modding in custom C# scripts for new mutations and effects, and if I could implement a weight gain system, that’d be crazy. Ultra pie in the sky, a weight gain system that affects the creature sprites too, I can’t even fathom how that would work
Anyway! no idea when it’ll be done, the sprites are coming fast rn, but I think I’ll lose steam eventually and progress will slow down, and I have no idea how the weight system’s gonna shake out and how many of my wishful ideas are really doable. For now, know that it’s coming, and I’ll probably release a public build once I’m satisfied with the content, at least I wanna have all the starter castes done. For now, check out my screenies:
also gimme a follow on bluesky for irregular updates or to see my other art, i’ve been posting abt my work on it there mainly! @bucklerparry.bsky.social on Bluesky

this is SUCH a fun looking mod! how extensive are you going? I am not familiar with the base game but is it possible to add inflation/stuffing as a mechanic NPC’s could use to defeat the player in certain encounters?

i might end up doing every sprite honestly! for mechanics i did actually workshop a little inflation effect that’s essentially like paralysis + the effects of flight, but i couldn’t quite get it to work

eh; I mean more of the funny popping kind of stuff! it’d be cool to have enemy NPC’s try to inflate/stuff you until you pop, I think.
guess that could be neat, i wouldn’t be able to do custom sprites for it but it would probably be kinda straightforward to re-describe an Engulf attack as “X is inflating you!”
ohmygosh this is… so neat… lovely work so far!! I absolutely adore npc’s having added exertion sounds in their text… so cute…
Maybe you could workshop in weight stages for the main character and the fatter they are, the more frequent you would see sized up units? Or are you going for a more cosmetic type wg?
teehe. Yeah! I mean more of like the fact that the warden refers to “splitting the player open like a croc”; my mind immediately went to the thought of them trying to pop the player should they cause any trouble.
im really interested to see this develop maybe even bug test it (well when you eventually get to a point where its playable)
Look forward to more/gets my hands on it (when I get the game eventually)
Also, will you add immobility? That could be fun, or npcs that want to fatten the player up
Loves the sprits

immobility is actually already in as a mutation!
Though now that I’ve gotten a rudimentary weight stage system in progress I’ll have to redefine how these things work. And yeah im totally planning to have items/weapons/enemies that cause weight gain, i just need to figure out the specifics

Oh wonderous!
Might i also throw my two cents of smile based/“living food” based enemies as well

Hell fucking yes! I was going to try making something like this myself, but this is way better. I can’t wait to play this!

Ohhh? What were you thinkin about, im interested now
I was just going to add some mutations for weight with status effects, pretty much like you have. After that, I might have tried tying it in with the food hunger survival stuff in the game. Probably wouldn’t have made it that far. Probably wouldn’t have been any art, though I did one for a companion character. And then I probably would’ve played with it a bit, held onto it, and never posted it here. I used someone else’s companion mod to make a custom companion with dialogue and descriptions though. My plan to achieve this was mostly just modifying other people’s mutations and the vanilla ones.

mhmhmhm that rules, that companion idea… that’s interesting, i didn’t consider that, i’ll have to do some research

I did it by using the files from this as a base and editing them tbh

I do have to say, I adore your sprite work. It’s super cute. I’m so glad you’re doing all of them, that’s so cool.

Could that feature be somehow toggleable if it comes up? I don’t like inflation or popping.
