I’ve built a game about fighting food monsters in a dungeon and crafting gear out of food. I thought I’d post it here to let people know. It’s available on itch for windows and linux.
It’s all so charming!
As grindy as it gets, I like the dungeon crawler gameplay, though the real core of the game seems to be to try and discover better equipment and upgrading the shopkeeps, all to let you have a try at going further.
I didn’t get vary far (max level I got to is the one where watermelons start to appear), but I’d gladly come back to it to play again!
I can’t wait to see how this game’ll be once you add more stuff to it! Maybe random adventurers to get more inspiration for crafting? I’d also suggest adding a crafting recipe log, so that you can keep track of the stuff you’ve already discovered.
And while the art is nothing to scream about, it does add to the charm of the game. Makes it feel very personal.
Thank you for the feedback
A crafting recipe log sounds like a great idea, I’ll think about adding something like that.
There are some adventurers down in the dungeon which hints at different things that can be crafted but they don’t cover everything. The first one is at the first floor to the left.
I use C# with Monogame for the code and Krita for drawing.
When I play, I try to cook a lot of food and use different weapons depending on the situation. I’m a bit curious how deep players get or if anyone has completed it, I have no idea
You learn recipes by right clicking them, but they’re only here for cooking, which is done at the cooking station at your house. You cook things there by clicking on the relevant recipe that show up on the bottom of the screen after you learn them.
Crafting is done at the crafting station, also in your house, but you don’t get recipes for those. Instead you must guess them.
The help menu in the main menu tells you all of this!
Reporting in after trying to get a bit further.
I can’t stop playing. I’ll say it again, but it’s really a great game.
Got to the floor where you fight the orange monsters from the title screen I was certainly surprised to see that there was no way around using a teleportation tart to progress. Let alone use a second one a bit further down the way. Once I got there, I also realised that I forgot to pack a way out, so I was sort of softlocked lmao. It might be a good idea to either supply some kind of one-way exit out of there, or have an adventurer warn you.
The amount of secrets I found is truly absurd, which is a great thing. Can’t wait to see where those golden items lead to!
Also, after playing for a while, the game randomly froze and crashed (losing me a good hour of unsaved progression). I don’t really know why it did that, but I thought it’d be worth reporting.
And to answer rimean’s question, I haven’t found a way to do so yet. Closest thing I got is the fact that after resting, you keep a small part of your temporary max weight. It’s pretty easy to farm for temporary max weight indefinitely though.
I hope that this game keeps getting worked on! Cheers!
@rimean - There is no way yet to increase max weight and max will yet except for equipment.
@KabKebab - Thank you - Happy to hear someone got that far
There is no way out right now aside from the eclair, tart or intentionally losing to the monsters. I think I should change that and add an adventurer as you say or some other way back.
Sorry about the crash, I unfortunately haven’t added any crash logs yet. I’ll add it for the next update. Do you remember what you were doing at the time it crashed?
I have actually managed to complete the game now and got to the ending!
Also found a way to crash reliably. Getting to the last zone through the double staircase and then to the staircase north of there, the game always crashes once I try to go north after taking that set of stairs.
My other crash also happened trying to move north after taking the stairs in the secret path along the river.
The game won’t let me pick up the items dropped by enemies like the slime cubes and coins. Also I can’t seem to activate/save the game through the ESC key?
I wish I knew about that before closing my game. I figured out the picking up the items thing but I closed out without saving. I never would have figured that out without being told. There really should be something in game to tell the controls. Or at least post the controls on the game’s itch.io page and on this page to.
im new to this game and will give it a try now i just like to thank you for useing self made art rether than AI not to down play any users who use AI art in there game but i just like to see new art/ personaly made art more than AI text to art stuff.
