Would be interesting to see some speedrunning attempts for how quickly one can fix the ship.

out of curiosity what software are you using to program this all in? I looked through earlier comments to see if you mentioned it.

This is in GameMaker Studio, the same as Undertale. I can tell because the data.win is editable with UndertaleModTool

I believe that it also says “made with game maker studio 2” in the top left of the game window when playing. Like where it usually says the name of the game or whatever. I’m at work so I can’t verify this claim tho.

Yep, and the icon for the game is the Game Maker logo.

I can’t seem to load it with the tool. It says:

An error occured while trying to load:
Expected 1
at 00000640 while reading object
UndertaleModLib.Models.UndertaleSprite
while reading item 1 of 66 in a list of
UndertaleModLib.Models.UndertaleSprite in chunk SPRT

I’m not sure if this happened to you as well or if you know what’s the problem.

Had a lot of fun with it! The sprite work was really animated and cute and would love to see a sprite sheet.

Look forward to more updates!

Yea, that’s what happened when I opened it. I meant that it is the same “kind” of file, not that the tool can actually work with it right now.

Absolutely marvelous work, as always from you! In fact, while playing Satisfactory, I thought that it’d be interesting to have a manufacturing game with weight gain functionality. And then I noticed this right here! Really hope to see it advance further and further. As a small suggestion, ability to skip game intro would be awesome to have.

I just had a thought, a Day/Night cycle, that way the solar panels would have usefulness depending on the cycle and would give reason for having the wind turbines for night time.

Got to the end game, was a fun little thing. Though, getting crystals was one of the real limiting factors, maybe the more transfer speed you have should let you get more crystals when you charge the drill. Wish there was some dialogue at the max weight level. Also when you finish all the research, you can no longer deconstruct the research table, the option isn’t there. Outside those little issues the game is great, can’t wait for future updates to it!

Finished the game and got every upgrade (minus the one that costs 12000 energy for some reason), a few thoughts:

  • The spritework is really good! I love the little bouncy animations during the run cycle at higher weight levels
  • Crystals are a bit slow towards the endgame, even with the spending energy to increase manufacturing speed it still felt very grind-y
  • Slimes became a complete non-issue once I had the level 3 auto-turrets, all I had to do was place two walls and two turrets on each side of the map and I was able to leave them unattended for long periods of time
  • Once you get big enough, the character sprite completely covers up most buildings and is wider than one space, so it gets a bit tricky to tell what you’re interacting with. What I did is lined up the character’s head to the building I was using, but even that didn’t work so well at max weight. What would be neat is a late-game upgrade that adds sprites below the ground indicating what each building is along with a box or an arrow indicating where you’re standing. You could even have some dialogue to go with it? Something like “sen im too fat i literally cannot see what i am doing” “well theres a holographic display you could add to your suit”

There’s a box in the upper left that tells you what you’re standing on top of, so that might come in handy for ya

So, what you mean about this box location, is…

This one up here. It’s not going to help if you have a bunch of the same building next to each other, but it’ll get you there in terms of figuring out what you’re standing in front of.

any plans where we eat the slimes? also any plans for different race?

Nah, I honestly used slimes because they’re a really easy to animate generic enemy, and now regret not thinking about the fact everyone would assume that automatically means slime inflation is going to be in the game. Also no to the different races, that would be a lot of time spent on doing sprites instead of finishing up the game, and I wanted to keep the scope of this project pretty small anyway.

ah i see well it a good game none the less

Honestly that’s preferable, I feel slime inflation is a little too well-worn.

I really liked this! Good ideas, I’m excited to see the progress this makes. Once I figured out how the mechanics worked, this was fun and satisfying!
Figuring out what methods of generating power were most effective, deciding which technologies to research first, and laying the buildings out strategically was great. I like how it costs energy to move, it makes keeping things close together matter and fits well thematically with weight gain. It’s clever!

I was surprised by the aliens suddenly getting a lot stronger a couple of times, so I had to restart twice. It also took me a bit to realize you have to stand in front of generators to get power from them versus them generating power passively. I was early enough in that having to restart was just a small setback, and I appreciated that there was some difficulty to it. I think an effect that shows energy entering the player from the generator would make the latter clearer, and some sort of warning when the slimes get stronger might help new players with the former. Oh, and it didn’t end up mattering, but the ability to know how big buildings will get when fully upgraded before placing them would be nice.

Also, there’s not much challenge to the slimes if the player prioritizes turret/wall upgrades early, and it’s easy to keep up that momentum. During most of my third playthrough, I wasn’t threatened by the slimes, especially because I kept my walls well-repaired while waiting for crystals to come in. I appreciated not being too distracted by the place being completely overrun, but I can’t help but be excited to see where this system goes in the future.

I really liked the little dialogues you get after reaching new energy milestones; they’re very rewarding, and I think they added a lot to my experience. I’m genuinely looking forward to what scene might take place when the ending is implemented. Will our hero even fit onto the ship? Well, you can slim down, I suppose…

The designs, artwork, and animations are very cute and effective. I really started to look forward to seeing the new designs for buildings after getting upgrades, and, of course, seeing the new weight levels is its own treat. The heavier footsteps and slower speed at higher weights add to the effect nicely. I really have no complaints with this side of things, it’s all lovely. Wouldn’t change a thing. Top marks!

I’m excited to see where this goes! This might be one of my favorite projects on the site at the moment. Sorry to dump a wall of text on you, I just hope my feedback might be helpful to you in some way. I’ll be paying close attention to this as it develops!
