Team Fortress 2 - The Puffed & Pressurized Pyro

Make Some Room!

Have you ever taken a look at the Pyro and thought, “It’s a shame no one’s completely filled their suit with air until they become nothing but an inflated spherical mass,” or “I wish the Pyro had a body that I can strive to have one day”? Well look no further, as the easiest solution to both of these queries were just a few tanks of air, and nothing more! Who knew it’d be so simple!

Preview:

Features Include:

  • A full replacement of the Pyro’s playermodel.
  • Original suit mesh, modelled and textured from scratch.
  • Does not replace any of the Pyro’s default textures.
  • Fully functional ragdoll support. (Rolls around!)
  • New custom animations for every weapon, with directional movements based off of Lola Pop from ARMS.
  • Intact hitboxes, albeit spread out inside the suit.
  • Supports cosmetic headwear, masks, gloves, medals, most grenades, canteens, backpacks, boots, and the Zombie Cursed Soul by default.
  • Just small enough to fit on the Class Select screen, loadout menu, and 3D class HUD.

Optional Inclusions:

  • A suit variation that’s more perfectly rounded, as opposed to the default feminine physique.
  • Standalone files that do not replace the base Pyro, to allow for custom playermodel plugins on servers. (Or SFM/GMOD use!)

Work In Progress Notes:

  • Crouching and Swimming animations are duplicated from the normal idle animations and are slowed down.
  • Taunts and the class select animation have not been set up.
  • Gesture animations have not been created.
  • Weapons currently do not play any visual attack animations.
  • Reload animations have not been created, and probably will not be made, due to the Pyro’s current… circumstances.
  • The suit is not as visually smooth as I’d prefer in-game, although it looks fine in SFM from all of my testing.
  • Does not include any custom jigglebones, as I mainly wanted to simulate a fully inflated latex suit. This could be provided later for those who want this mod to feel a little fatter.

Developer Thoughts:

This has been a project I’ve wanted to see created for a long time, and I know enough about how to work in Source and Blender, so I figure I’d take the leap myself and do it right!

I think I’d like to eventually have a variation with suspenders, but with my current modelling knowledge, admittedly of which is not at all vast, I cannot currently execute such a look, in the way I would like anyway.

With all that said, while I would like to ask around for additional help, I currently do not know anybody who’s into this kinda stuff to ask. I’m also not an expert animator or modeller by any means, so everything done for this mod has been to the best of my ability and patience. I’m proud of what I’ve managed, even if it is imperfect in places, so I hope you all enjoy what’s currently done thus far!

Also, I’m perfectly fine with anyone who wishes to use this mod as a plugin for their server under one condition: let me know what server, I’d love to see it all in action!

Just pushed an update to the mod:

  • Updated support for Garry’s Mod, due to the previous iteration having a troublesome hitbox. This simply adds a new folder, made specifically just for Garry’s Mod.

Yadda yadda pyrocynical joke blah blah blah

This mod is GENUINELY really impressive, i’ve never seen a model mod pushed so far outside the base and still have it work, its also really fun watching the unique rolling ragdolls!

This is incredible! I’ll definitely be trying it soon. Considering it has unique hitboxes, I presume this isn’t compatible with the Casual Preloader?

Also, does it have any custom audio?

It seems compatible with the Casual Preloader from what I’ve seen of other folks using it! (I’ve not used mods in TF2 myself for a long time now, so I hadn’t tested it myself)

As for the hitboxes, I don’t think It would be a problem, since the server itself is the decider of how the hitbox is shaped and positioned, based off of the original Pyro model. There will definitely be some mismatch in cases such as trying to land headshots on an enemy pyro, but there’s not much I can personally do about that.

As for audio, currently this only affects the model and animations for the Pyro. It would be nice to include custom lower pitched voicelines or other such ideas, but for the moment I’m personally focusing on the model side of things!

really fun mod to play around with, took some screenshots with our pyro loadouts

wish you luck if/when you work on making badges and canteen slot items work!
edit: forgot to mention, if you don’t mind ideas being thrown at you. i think it’d be real cute, if/when you make the Flair! cosmetic function with this model, if the Flair! was around the belt. that might be a lot of work, though, so i’d fully understand if you don’t bother with that specific cosmetic

It’s honestly so validating seeing other folks’ loadouts with the mod in action, I love these!!

Also here’s the current progress on the next update for the mod, that I’ll be taking a while to finish, since I want to include more substantial changes than what’s pictured below, buut…

So far the Flair! cosmetic has been the only cosmetic I’ve edited thus far, namely due to how easy it was to alter and set up for the Pyro. I’ve added a few extra pins to make the belt seem less bare, so I hope that’s okay!

Also included in the screenshot are proper bone positions for medals, the grenades, and canteen (the Pyro’s a bit too big to see it though)! They took me a little bit to get right, since I’m somewhat new to using blender, but they’re finally supported!

Somehow Fire Breather, Pyromantic Plumage and Blazing Bull don’t appear in game… Oh, I just found out those costumes are for Halloween mode only. That’s lame…

Anyone interested for Dodgeball in Halloween mode?

I have just pushed a large update for the mod, finally finishing the main weapon animations:

  • Added animation support for the All-Class weapons, Grappling Hook, Thermal Thruster, Gas Passer, and Hot Hand.
  • Properly supported the Medal, Grenades, and Canteen bones.
  • Added a paintable suit texture, mainly for use in SFM/GMOD.
  • Added support for the Flair! pins.

all-class weapon support and flair support,
Perfection.

another fun thing, cosmetic beltmaxxing (with a badge, a canteen, flair!, and chiromancer’s kit):

it also improves my normal loadouts, love the duck journal

absolutely adore this model

Just popping in to say this mod is genuinely incredible, and despite working with 3d models myself I can’t imagine the work that went into making this happen.

I also must report that there are still items that are broken in their placement. The Jingle Belt, Pocket Raiders, Cremator’s Conscience are all busted. And while it isn’t technically in the wrong place the Death Support Pack is a little funky looking, same with the Masked Loyalty (although I don’t really know what you could do aside from making them into a whole new cosmetic which is unrealistic to ask.)

It would be nice to see these cosmetics fixed for the mod, though at the moment, I’m afraid I don’t have the blender skills to do too much more than what I’ve done already. (As ironic as that may sound, given the way the Pyro currently looks)

I did take a look at a few cosmetics and noticed that some don’t actually use the same bones that the grenades use, instead opting to be parented to the spine bones. Some of these wouldn’t be impossible to fix, but anything that involves weight painting is beyond my current skills.

I’d love to ask around for folks who know better as to what they’re doing to help me with the mod, though I don’t currently know anyone who’s into this kink to help me, and I think if I did, I wouldn’t want to be a bother.

So what about Cauterizer’s Caudal Appendage, that dragon tail thing?

I believe it would be simple enough to set up, though when it comes to models with multiple bones that aren’t standard on the Player model itself, I struggle a little making sure to maintain those bones and their positions.

Whenever I have the motivation to add more to the mod, I’ll definitely take a gander at seeing what I can do!

Made this account just to say how much i love this mod. It completely flew under my radar for a while. Its so good. Finally got a pyro mode accurate to my pyros actual shape. lovely work overall. Also side note of reminding people that “cl_first_person_uses_world_model 1” does exist for that slight bit more immersion in being a balloon, but sadly it does clip a bit under the head.

Honestly this would be easily the best pyro mod if there was an audio pack to go with it maybe to add creaks and groans into the pyros normal sounds.
