The silencing of dissenting opinions

There’s your problem! The name for the legislation is The First Amendment to the United States Constituion, sometimes 1A for short.

No, that was it. I just had the one point.

Not sure why you’re surprised, OP…this is the same site that has left open threads for literal scams and the mods hemmed and hawwed about how it’s not their place to close them because “buyer beware.”

The site literally has a rule forbidding people to ask about the status of updates even for games being sold.

Nothing is going to change dude. Criticism of any “project” is heavily discouraged.

On the first part, fair. Though far as I’m aware Krod does have a disclaimer on all of them. Not to mention the community itself will let you know in more recent posts. (You specifically in one case, if I remember correctly). I think that’s probably good enough, but I would be for the idea of locking threads like that after the ‘disclaimer’ reply.

On this part, this morning there was a guy that necro’d (as far as I can tell) every tabletop thread on the site to say ‘so… is this open?’
It was marked full 3 years ago. No. It’s probably not open.
Without a rule like that I guarantee it’d happen every day.

Which would just make the forums kinda messy.
Usually paid projects have other avenues for which you could ask about updates as well - so I don’t really think the policy is an issue here.

Honestly? I touched on this in my first reply.
Devs here are usually hobbyists, and for some it can be nerve wracking to put your project out there.
Constructive criticism for example: coding help, game mechanics, bug fixing
is usually probably appreciated. Sometimes devs want to know what else you’d like to see, and will ask. Sometimes they don’t and I think that’s fine too.
A lot of projects on here are things people made primarily for themselves, and decided to share them. So even if I don’t have anything to add in the context of the above, I at least try to say something I liked about the projects I get around to trying. This is not a review site, so I don’t really see the point of ‘criticism’ in that sense. (I will reiterate, I agree on the topic of predatory projects)

Things beyond that, I believe fall into the category of ‘who asked?’

I don’t like slob/gas/inflation/etc.
Can I exercise my fundamental freedoms to tell all these devs I think their project sucks because it has something I don’t like in it, and that the offending elements should be removed?
I probably can, though I would hardly be surprised if my ‘opinion’ was removed.

Is everyone involved left happier if I just don’t say anything at all and move on to things I do like?
Yeah.

I just don’t see the point.

Saying ‘This is trash because it has ai art’ (which was not even the focus of the project) and devolving into the usual ai discussion that has been beaten to death at this point (and Beardo specifically has experienced multiple times before and has made his point clear on) is not constructive for that individual project.

Driving it to the point of pushing out a contributing member of the community (of which I am not. I have never made a game and don’t have any plans to currently) is all the more tragic.

Nope. Just checked both Thicker Treat and Fill Me Up. Both threads remain open and there’s nothing in FMU that warns about it being a scam. And Thicker Treat simply has an innoculous little header that goes: " :grinning: It’s been a while since we’ve seen eltipito42 — their last post was 3 years ago."

And yes, I did specifically it out in the Thicker Treat post that the project was abandonded…which spawned me making a post about closing the threads of abandoned projects and the mods just went “aw shucks, that’s too hard,” and claiming that it could lead to gasp people actually asking for status updates for “games” that people mock up to beg for patreon donations!

Without a rule like that I guarantee it’d happen every day.

Ok…so close threads that have gone more than 6 months without the OP replying to them. That’d completely prevent this from happening.

You’re not just a hobbyist if you’re actively soliciting money.

I don’t like slob/gas/inflation/etc.

That’s not remotely similar to the objections people bring up regarding AI art. You example is just a personal preference…the fact is AI art is built upon machine learning algorithms that have been trained on stolen work. So it doesn’t matter if the “creator” spends 10 minutes editing their prompts to make their “art” look better…the simple fact is, said “art” couldn’t exist if not for the fact all of these AI models have utilized actual pieces of art created by people, without permission or payment.

I was going to reply to this with a pithy comment…but I think that the fact that you’re making 48k/year on patreon with projects that utilize AI art and have this dismissive attitude will just prove my point for me.

Like, I get why you got so weirdly defensive about people criticizing the use of AI “art”…you’d actually have to get a real job if it didn’t exist.

Okay and on the back of this, I think this thread has run its useful course. What’s said has been said by all concerned, some salient points have been made throughout, but now we’re freewheeling and I don’t think the original intent of this thread was for it to become the forum’s sparring pit for all grievances and yet here we are.

If there are follow up discussions to be had about any of the over topics broached here I would encourage relevant discussions in new and appropriate threads. For now I will see to wrapping this thread up and locking it within the next six hours, if not sooner, so get any closing points in while you can.

OP I give you Exibit A to support what I said earlier: criticism of projects is highly discouraged and nothing will change.

The mods don’t give a shit about the ethical questions regarding AI art if said questions get a couple of “game devs” upset.

That’s not what this particular thread is for, my fiery friend. We welcome a separate discussion on this topic of AI, even going so far as offering to host such a discussion but this was not the intent of this thread.

Personal call outs are unconducive to good discussion. Please rein it in.

lmao lol

Exibit B…the fact this has been happening for like 5 minutes now lol.

Aren’t you that racist guy from Fatgeria lol? Goofy ah individual :skull:
Also this yapfest has really been going for a full day

That fact that you’re claiming I’m the racist guy from Fatgeria when I pointed out that naming a character “Jew” was anti-semitic and racist…says all I need to know about you.

Bro’s such a keyboard warrior that he circled all the way back around from helping to racism lol

Ok, so the dude making damn near 50k/yr and advertising his product on this site can shit all over the conversation and mock the idea of the discussion by posting “womp womp” to the concerns…but no one can point out that’s hypocritical of him? Ok. Cool.

Well 24 mins still falls under the “within six hours” umbrella. I think we’re done here.

There was a good quote for a situation like this that I heard recently. I believe it went something like “the mods should let us say whatever I want.” This thread is a wonderful example of just how nice people can be to one another when moderation is nonexistent. The ad hominem is really classy, but thankfully I’m also a total keyboard warrior so it’s nice to have a chance to engage with this kind of vitriolic rhetoric.

Sorry, but do you expect me to engage with bad faith arguments that are vastly more dismissive than my silly gif was? The guy said “well I don’t like AI so you don’t deserve any respect, sorry fucker.” Arguing with someone like that is beyond worthless.

Does that make you mad, buddy? Does the fact that most people aren’t weirdos who obsess over a tool upset you? Does your blood boil when you see that there’s an audience for something that you demand everyone else hate? Want me to private my earnings so your feelings won’t be hurt anymore?

Brother, you are blatantly breaking the rules of the forum. Like I said, I love this kind of discourse because it’s funny to me, but it’s just straight up not allowed here. At the very least, be thankful that the mods have actually given you a chance to spew garbage like this without punishment for once.

(and thus the Hundred Yaps’ War came to an end. weight gaming historians will look back on this event and wonder how the hell they managed to cram a thread with 100+ replies in a little over a day.)

Since things got a little buried I am going to summarize admin’s take and decision on this specific issue for easy reference by others in the future.

  1. After review of the limited evidence we feel our mods acted not to “silence dissenting opinions” but to instead maintain order in the topic and prevent it from going to far off topic.

  2. It is our official policy to take a very laissez faire attitude towards most discussion as long as it is on topic for the site and complies with our ToS and Rules. We do ask users to understand though that sometimes we are forced to take action to stop or limit discussion in order to maintain order and a respectful atmosphere on the site.

  3. If you feel any of our moderation staff is either abusing their power or unfairly silencing you I highly encourage you to reach out directly to me via a DM on the forums. We take matters like that very seriously and will be happy to hear out your case.
