Things with Unity just got scary

Watch this video all the way through if you like to use Unity:

The TLDR is: Apple is planning to buy the Unity Engine to offset the financial losses they’ll inevitably gain since they can no longer charge for off-app purchases due to the lawsuit.

You know they’re gonna tax ALL games that use the engine if this goes through. For the time being, keep an eye on this news, as it could spell trouble.

Edit: Edited this. I don’t know how Ubisoft got into my brain in that post (probably because I just got off work when I made it). Thank you for pointing out my mistake, I’ve corrected it. Apple is still planning to try and buy rights to the Unity engine, especially for their monetization tools. My flub does not negate what Apple wants to buy, which is still rights to a game engine that multiple games, including some in this forum, use.

Ubisoft don’t own Unity, they’re completely unrelated. Nor are Ubisoft even mentioned in that video. As for the rest of it, that’s just scaremongering. We saw what happened when Unity tried their own runtime tax, and there would be a similar widespread pushback if something even close to this were to happen. This is no reason to stir mass panic and “jump the ship!” cries.

Ubisoft doesn’t make commercial engines. They don’t even use Unity. They have the Snowdrop(Ubisoft Massive Games), Anvil(Assassin’s Creed), Dunia(Far Cry), and UbiArt(Rayman Games). All of these are proprietary engines they developed in house for their own games. Unity has always been a commercial engine and was initially developed for MacOS back in the early 2000s I believe before branching out to other platforms.

Also it would be rather odd for Apple to buy Ubisoft when Tencent already has a big share in them.

Damn, this truly is scary. I hope Apple doesn’t get away with this. Thankfully I’m working with Godot for my game project
