So I have planing on making a game but I don’t really have time between work and family to be creating full ideas and drawing them out. I turned to using AI for just concept art and ideas to help get the ball rolling. One of the friends I’ve made through playing games on this site brought up a fair point that a lot of people don’t like AI. I do see where people come from but I feel like if the finished project isn’t composed of just AI it’s fine. I think using it for the creative process should be okay. Thoughts?
Using AI for concept art won’t work because it can only really regurgitate concepts that already exist that is generated from it’s algorithm, it’ll be the most generic art possible by definition. Using a text generator might be different though, I’m not sure how far you can take that.
I mean I’ve gotten some good results! I was using ChatGPT til it was saying that it could generate thing cause of policy. (I’m only able to upload 1 photo since this is a new account)
I personally think using AI for concept creation and simply getting your bearings is fine, especially if you’re eventually replacing it, but often it’s not necessary. maybe not even ideal.
I assume you’re wanting to use AI to create a feel, have images as placeholders until you settle on something final.
using stock images should often be enough for this process. or even just simple mockups
it doesn’t have to be pretty, just convey an idea. it won’t have the style you want and AI might get closer, but you’d be looking to replace it eventually either way, and using AI might have you grow too attached to a certain style.
Even without stock images you could often get away by using simple shapes, crude drawings, even using paint would do.
Scribbling with a mouse on paint even giving you an advantage of creative possibilities over the use of AI.
Does this building need to be bigger? sure, we’ll add some lines for that.
There needs to be a tavern? add the word “tavern” somewhere above a door, now you have a tavern in your scene.
When you end up changing up your images for proper art, you’ve already figured out what you want and where you want it.
(I am aware things exist to partially edit an image and such with generative AI, but honestly, we’d be over-engineering at that point)
And with that, don’t over-engineer it! especially in early stages of development!
whatever you’d be making, we’re here for it!
and imagine what amazing personality you could give it with simple humble beginnings.
nothing in development is final until you decide it to be, don’t grow too attached to your v0.1, and don’t worry about anything having to be perfect or even looking remotely good. the fact that you’re willing to put in some hours exploring game creation is amazing enough as it is
you got this
Just be sure to mark that AI was used in the development so i can avoid it.
i think no ammount of AI generation use is fine.
The results are bland, the resource usage is out of this world, and every Gen AI tool is operating off of stolen datasets.
It is enabling theft, Data laundering, astonishing power waste, and by using it you are refining a tool that is meant to replace and destroy all human creatives.
my thoughts on this are rather negative.
That’s fair enough and I do see what you’re saying. I’m never for anything that’s 100% AI
I do agree with the use of AI generated art during the early stages of your game, as their purpose will merely be that of a placeholder while you focus your effort in coding or in something else. However is better if you limit the AI usage to only that and not to try use it for the final game, you can take care of the art aspect by the end of development if needed but try to either draw your own artwork or to get an artist that can do that for you.
I hope everything goes well with your game!
That’s the plan! I wanna be able to the art eventually just don’t have the time rn
