Unstable Frienemies v0.9.4 (Updated January 27th, 2025)

How’d you manage it?
I’ve tried a few times, but all my attempts have either ended up going down one of the other paths, or just resetting the game back to the first encounter with an error message.

Would be helpful to know, as I’ve been communicating with the dev on itch about the resetting to day one bug, so knowing how you got past that and onto the Frenemies path would be good to know.

so this is with 0.91

my tactic was to exercise once a day (alternating the options each day)
Only eat at the burger place and ONLY untill Full/Bloated
The rest of my day was digging in the library.

Usually what would happen is i’d eat just a burger at the beginning of the day. Libraray until on 10-20 energy. Then burgers until full/bloated and then work until bed.

Okay, that seems to have worked.
So what I personally was doing differently was avoiding the fast food, instead eating at home. And staying in the range of sated and full. If I went to the gym daily, I’d get the fitness path. Lounge around or eat more, and I’d be put down the obesity route.

After getting the worst ending (according to Trisha) I tried to not engage in the challenge at all. Eat healthy, go to the gym, earn money. This is what I got after day two or three ended. After that screen the game just rolls back all the way to the intro without crashing or anything

And this one I got after the intro. Not sure if it is connected to the prior error, but as you can see, money and hunger didn’t reset after the first error rerolled the story. Here I tried to reject the challenge from the getgo until the very end, then apologized and stayed silent when she pushed the challenge again. This error didn’t reroll the story and let me start the first day as usual, though locations in the city are still unlocked from the previous run

This was REALLY fun! I loved playing through the game, and each of the endings were fun to get, reasonably well explained, and ended with some really fun dialog. The completionist in me loved it.

I really adored this game! Is hard to find good fiction or games that have that mean streak written in right. Really excited to see what is left of this game coming up and your future endeavors!

Also… Is there some secret code for the Try the Doors at the Investment firm?

Do you also plan on adding a job at the fast food place or buffet? I know you added one for the pure fitness route but her signing up for free food sounds pretty funny…

What a great game! Curvy route was my favourite but I really enjoyed them all. Cant wait to see what you have planned for this game or new games in the future!

Re your two spoilered questions -
A - Nope, those are totally locked, for real for real. The idea was to reinforce the quiet ominousness of the facility. You can engage with it, but in many ways remain below their notice.
B - I ~kind of~ have a plan to flesh out the fast food place a little more. Employment is part of that, sort of. If I explain it I’ll kill my impulse to actually MAKE it, so I’ll just leave it kind of in the air, but you might get something close to what you’re asking about in a future update. EDIT : This exists now, as of 0.9.4! You can get pretty close to the clerk if you do… something… now.

Thank you for the support! I really appreciate all the bug reports I’m getting, I want the data so I can correct things that slipped past me, but it’s a relief to hear that some people have the as-intended experience and enjoy it.

Thank you for accidentally joining the bug-hunting-team! Sorry!

That was a pretty solid writeup, thank you. What version are you running? 0.9.1? 0.9.2? Browser in-window version?

After the ‘worst’ end, you had to start a new game from the main menu (with T and J holding knives behind their backs), correct?

If you’re running a version pre-0.9.2, here’s the probable issue :
In Ren’py, X == Y is a variable check (does X equal Y? If so, launch the next bit of code)
X = Y is a value assignment (X now equals whatever Y equals)

When the game decides at the end of the third day after the first (introduction) meeting with Jasmine what path Trisha has started down, two of the variable assignments at the bottom of the “well, if nothing else has triggered yet, consider these options” list were accidentally variable checks (==) instead of assignments (=). So it’s possible to slip through without stepping down the path into the next meeting is the various variables are just-so. That launches the meeting function, but since you’re still at the starter weight/path, it just runs the initial intro again. Afterwards, it shows that exception catch statement I programmed in about the S D F pathways.

But I’m pretty sure that’s all fixed up in 0.9.2. Heraclion helped me find the problem so I could push a patch about 22 hours ago. If you ARE running 0.9.2, the current version on Itch, please please please let me know, since that means my fix didn’t actually fix it.

Not going to lie, I would love to see a new ending where Trisha enjoys being a gluttonous pig, finds love and embraces the lifestyle instead of breaking down.

Considering that she serious has mobility issue, she’ll definitely need a help then, and it definitely won’t be from Jes.

Just got all of the endings. This game hit a bunch of sweet spots. The attention to every action slightly changing based off the path and level stage of the path was glorious.

Spoilers for just raving about the content

Really loved the gym scenes most of all. The slim thick one having her body jiggling all about as guys stared… The fat paths having her be unable to do even simple exercises. Her ass growing too large to sit on the work out machines! Being unable to walk fully around the park!

There being some inherent laziness ingrained deep in her, the food scenes with her eating entire platters of lasagna. Her just stuffing her mouth with cheap tasteless burgers. I do love how the fastfood place genuinely sucks but she is so fat she doesn’t care!

Her just outright refusing to go to the gym at the max weight! It really shows how her basic instincts on food and physical activity had morphed and transformed into something that would leave her unable to ever lose weight.

How much her meetings with her “friend” demoralized her but still egged her to keep going. Especially on the fat path. Watching her hated rival grow more curvy as Trisha herself became a potato woman was extremely hot! The barely veiled insults and negging was so much fun!

Also as someone who doesn’t like most AI you used it super well! Loved all the pictures, especially the daily update ones! The flashing back to her previous figure to her new forever one hit especially hard for me.

It makes me wish there was more for her to interact with. That made me scour every little possible bit she could do! You have a real knack for making something she fully chose to do feel
Inevitably and as of she was destined to that path.

The project being labeled 0.9 sounds like it is nearly done. Are there any further planned interactionsor locations? Any endings planned on being added?

With how worldly and amazing Trisha’s rival was I was a little surprised that her doomscrolling never went too hard on stalking their travels. Watching her friend do amazing things as she sat on her couch eating chips. I feel like there is a lot with that dynamic to play with!!!

Thanks for the compliments, and for specifically talking about what you particularly liked. I’ll take any “I like it” or “I didn’t like it” input, but when people spell out ~why~ it’s a huge boon for me going forward with future projects. I’m particularly glad to hear that that going through the hassle of writing so many variations of the same activities paid off.

I’ve got one more ending I’m adding to address some common requests / concerns, and a quasi-minigame. They’re already coded, but I need to run them front-to-back a couple of times to ensure they’re working as expected. Then, after some time goes by without any new bugs getting reported, I’ll be calling it version 1.0.0.

0.9.4 released. There’s now an eighth ending that (spoilers) fleshes out the relationship with the burger clerk a bit and gives a way to spend cash on a major purchase for all the big rollers with holes in their pockets.

There’s also a scavenger hunt type event that might crop up randomly, a small rebalancing of the pathway choice that happens behind the scenes after the first few days, and (at least on Windows) the default Ren’py icon for the task bar has been replaced by a little mini-Trisha.

Well isn’t this some wonderful news after just finding the 7th ending! Also, just wanted to add to the praise here - this has been an excellent balance of the daily life sim and choose your own adventure genres that are so prevalent in this niche. Having set story lines but having to use some game mechanics is something I appreciate (and something I have strove for in my own meager catalog). The discussion about AI images have been beat to death on this website (and the internet writ large), but I will say that despite my misgivings of the technology, it was quite well utilized and looked good.

All in all, I just wanted to add another kudos to your ever-growing pile!

I enjoyed the new ending! I wasn’t expecting more main content, so this was a fun surprise. I would have loved an extra render or two across the different time frames, but it honestly worked really well to have things be more implied than explicit.

I know you said you really liked the why when hearing what people liked about the game, so a few specific details I forgot in my first post:

  1. Many games in this genre make the sub/dom dynamic feel really fetishy. You did a great job of scratching the sub/dom itch (which I LOVE), while still making it feel like good, real story telling and not just a fetish.
  2. It is hard to make a sandbox game with it not feeling too grindy/repetitive. You did this REALLY well. I think the images overnight with Trisha’s dialogue really helped here.
  3. I love different endings, and these ones felt legitimate and unique and not just thrown in for the hell of it.
  4. I’m not normally an AI art person, but it was really tastefully done here. Renders were solid and lifelike and felt like they added to the game in a meaningful way.

I’ve hit all eight endings!

I’ve replayed this game a few times now and since you seem to want more detailed info on what is liked I’ll do that!

Really loved how it was a battle between Trisha and Jasmine during all of this. It is very hot that there is a chance to ‘win’ in these games so that when the MC falls they fall hard.

The way that Jasmine treats Trisha as she is winning is also something extra that is not seen enough! Just gloating and enjoying the state of her embarrassed rival chubbed up in such an unappealing way as she just got hotter works so well!

I also very much enjoyed the sheer humiliation of the endings. True payback or just unjustified punishments hit the spot so hard. The new ending was nice and her wearing a crown as she was fed was fun but damn, you really go hard absolute on destruction! Hope your future games have choices that humiliating in it too!

The details in everything the character did. How weak and pathetic she was, like using the leg machines at second to max weight and her body just refusing to use any energy for it was perfect. The writing was excellent over all, and the character being in first person helped immerse me in the story!

The game length was also paced incredibly well! It left me very much wanting more, which is pretty hard to do on life sims.

I think the humiliation aspect is the best part of this game. There are so many good parts, but that is just done so well here and is something that is really hard to get right.

I second how important the humiliation aspects are!

You did a lot to make it fun especially at the height of the levels. You even represented it on a mechanical level which feels very rare.

Going up stairs requiring energy points felt so funny but also fit so well. Also her taking a taxi to get to the gym was so perfect I felt second hand embarrassment. Getting new food choices at most of the locations you went to, how sitting on the couch just changed with every weight level. New food girl instincts was fun!

Just everything getting harder the fatter she was felt so represented here. The only thing I felt could have been done better was reactions from the other people around her. There were a few but it could have gone harder!
