By the Light's Grace [Gain Jam 2024]

Is that… a compliment? I am genuinely not sure what to make of this, and the artist is equally if not more confused than I am.

Please don’t take this as some kind of hurt/annoyed reaction, I am just genuinely baffled and want to know what this means, that’s all.

I was very late to playing this one, but I LOVE the progression sizes/art of the Goddess throughout, hope to see more in the future

JUDGES’ VERDICTS:

I was slightly worried this would be typical turn based RPG fare but the moment you’re ripped out of it and thrown into actually throwing hands with enemies, I was 100% in. Showing up with the unexpected outcome right out of the gate. Apart from some rather defensive fish, it was an absolute blast to play and the style of combat really paired well with the no nonense, nothing but the most direct and practical solution protagonist. The writing that accompanied the feeding as well as where the story ended up was not only very well written and a joy to read, held yet more in the way of unexpected outcomes. It would have been handy to know how many monsters were still alive in a given area as a lot of the final parts I found myself searching high and low in each place to get those final portions of food. A bit more gameplay variety would have been nice too but given the time you had, it’s understandable why that wasn’t the case. A fun adventure which utilises the theme very well.

This was a surprise sleeper hit out of the Jam for me! While it hits the theme easily, what really captivated me was the heart suffused throughout the writing. The exchanges between the two characters that would spring up at various points mid-level were a treat (why don’t more RPGs do this?) as we explored more of their relationship over the course of her story. The fetish elements, despite lacking visuals, were nicely detailed.

The Punchout style gameplay was entertaining, if a little busy but it was a bold attempt at flipping the battle format that was handled perfectly within the story thanks to our fascinating MC.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one and I would be happy to see this make its way to the Finals.
