What Games did the characters come from? (I know that one of them came from “Space Thumper”)
most of them come from super fatty RPG if Im not mistaken. There are a couple of non-video game appearances as well tho.
Hello everyone! Its been a long while since anything significant has happened with the game, so I wanted to revive it a bit by asking the community some questions on upcoming features so I can get feedback on how I should pursue changes to the game.
The first question is should the character selection screen be moved? The interface was based on Smash Bros’ character select screen, but after some time thinking I’m wondering if this could be updated to streamline play. I’m not sure how often players change their characters, so if they’re changed regularly then I’ll leave it be. But if they’re not changed too often then we can move the character selection screen into a submenu that can be accessed from any game window or even the main menu (still figuring it out but I wanted input before going ahead with it).
One feature I’d like to critically mention that may sway votes is by adding a character randomizer option like most character select games have. However I’d add in an additional option to choose which of the unlocked characters you can randomize into, so that players can set their opponents to a small group of favorite characters.
TL;DR: Should I move the character select screen because your not changing characters that often, or leave it be because you change them frequently? A new feature to select random for character selection is coming up, and the random choice allows you to create your own pool of characters to pick from.
- Move it into a corner
- Leave it be
Question number dos is how should achievements relate to characters? I know I dropped the ball on its initial implementation, so I was wondering about a method to fix it as some of you have should displeasure for character unlocks (and I don’t like the implementation because it awkwardly chokeholds my workflow). A planned feature I have is the Shop, in which you can use the money earned from games to unlock aesthetic items such as new card backs, food sprites, and music. But I’m curious if the fix to the achievement system could tie into the Shop feature, so I provided some ideas on how I could approach this that the community would be happy with:
- Option 1: Character shop sounds neat :3
Achievements will provide a currency that can be spent to unlock characters from the shop. This means that you can save up and choose who you want to unlock and when instead of trying to complete a difficult task for your desired character. Achievements will give you this special currency based on the difficulty of completing said achievement. - Option 2: Leave most characters unlocked, but you can hide a couple in the shop :3
This is the same as the previous except special characters would be behind the special currency. Achievements will provide less of the currency compared to option 1. - Option 3: Mix it with unlockable outfits that I can buy
This option would have no special currency, all characters are unlocked, but character alts will require you to complete achievements to unlock them first, and then buy them from the shop. - Option 4: Some characters as achievement unlockables sound fun, but leave most of them out of it please! >:/
Same as option 2 but special characters would be behind certain achievements instead of in the shop. - Option 5: Just leave all the characters unlocked please! >:/
All characters and their alts/outfits are accessible from the get go, just like it originally was. - Option 6: Other (please comment)
Maybe I didn’t think about something and you have a better solution than what I presented here.

I tried thinking of a third question but I don’t got one for y’all atm, so anyways thank you for taking the time to vote on how this game could be made better! Let’s fill this year with even more fun! Have a great, safe, and fun day!
Hey Kanto! Was wondering if you’ve ever considered adding dialogue to the characters? Maybe having a bit of banter between competitors or having different dialogues based off of their fullness or who ever they may be talking to!
how do you mod characters into the game ?
Here’s a link to the current method of adding your own character to the game (adding characters has been present since V1.1, though there maybe a small change to the process in V1.5):
You can also use the Struct file as a base and the Tyler DLC as a reference for how to add your own characters. Comment on the tutorial page if you need anything clarified.
This leads me to a question: Is the written explanation poor enough that I should create a video explanation?
Is the written tutorial for creating add-ons for the game hard to understand?
- Yes
- A little confusing
- No
I haven’t considered this yet. This could really help shape characters by showing their personality and help differentiate them from one another besides just aesthetic vibes. Since I don’t have much access to a voice cast (oh Arceus the file size with audio alone) they would likely be more dialogue bubbles that’ll pop up every once in a while, with an option to turn them off if they’re too distracting. At least this is my initial thought on tackling the problem, I’ll see about playing around with it and would be accepting of ideas from anyone else on how to tackle this. :3 Thank you for suggestion!
(A little late but) Thank you to everyone who voted on these polls! With this I can take development in a direction that players will enjoy more (and hopefully I enjoy more as well). So with these results, I’ll leave the character select screen at the forefront of games but finally add a random character selector (regardless of the votes) and change the method of character unlocks to the proposed shop system (which might wipe current save progress from the achievement based unlocks, but I’ll keep that from happening in future versions). As for the written tutorial, I’ll see if I can reword it to be more clear as majority find it confusing. I’d like to ask some questions I’d like some responses for so I can understand some of the voting:
-
How frequently do you swap characters between games?
To be honest I’m surprised by the response as I thought navigating to the settings menu was a hassle. -
What part of the tutorial might you find confusing?
I’d like to know what to clarify and work on for better comprehension on adding your own characters. Maybe I could add more images and a step by step video tutorial?
Thank you again for your votes, I’m busy with university studies so I can’t give a definitive answer on when the next update comes out, especially since we’re in midterms month Have a nice, safe, and fun day!
Also if anyone is interested, you can join my discord server Expandyssey to see development for this game or for any of my other games.
And so I’m not just advertising on my own thread, let me update you all on the current progress. I almost got the achievements system overhauled and by the looks of it I truly prefer this new method (I’m a dumby at the end of the day anyways so XP ). I just need to format the achievements screen and it “should” be ready for testing so I can debug the achievements and ensure they are 100% working. Next will be the shop so you can use those hard earned on the characters you want :3
So, I’m curious about what folk would like more for how the next update should be handled. Would folk prefer me to split it into different sized parts or have it all in one push? Where Part One focuses on fixing the problems that V1.4 introduced and polishing up in general; Part Two focuses on revamping the current games, and expanding on systems currently present; and Part Three finishes by adding all the shop items, customization, and improving support for user created content. By breaking them into smaller parts the release time will be faster, but making it one big update would take more time.
To explain each part further, Part One would be fixing as many “broken” or “needed” systems. Such as fixing the relationship between the characters and achievements, adding an auto complete to the Solitaire games, and bug fixes to name a few. Polish would happen at the end of a grouped part, but basically I’d polish by giving GUI elements betters art, more audio and visual feedback, more belch noises, etc. So Part One would be the “fixer upper” update in how the game just needs a little tweak to be in a better state.
Part Two would be revamping the games that are currently present by giving them more rules and expanding on their mechanics to flesh them out more. I’ve been making a list of how to revamp each one so if done correctly then each give more options of play such as different board design layouts. So Part Two would be the “game tuneup” update that makes games feel more fun.
Part Three would add a customization menu for you to customize your items such as food, cards, music, etc. Part of which would be adding the shop items for said items. In other words, first half is adding the shop system and character shop, while second half adds all the delicious goodies for customization. And a big part of customization would be allowing you to add-on your own card art, dice skins, food items, etc. so you can express yourself your own way if you do desire, and share it with your fellow fatties if you so choose. A glaring flaw has been how add-ons creation seems to be a “trial and error”-esque system on understanding what tools are accessible to you, so part of this would be adding an add-on assist menu to help someone create content more intuitively (for desktop only). So Part Three would be a “cosmetic creations” update by giving you lovely folk a new thing called a “creator pack” for holding all the new content one can add to the game (but still allowing older created content to work as intended if they’re not in a creator pack)
- The Whole Pie (Slowest)
- Parts (1+2), then (3)
- Part (1), then (2+3)
- All Parts Split (Fastest)
To mention again, I do NOT have a time of release or even an estimation thereof, as it’s hard for me to even figure out the amount of work it’ll take to revamp systems and add new mechanics with university breathing down my neck. But I do honestly love this project as it’s a fun game to build up and see how much more I can add to it. I do apologies for the hiatus as an IRL event pulled everything to a halt. There has been new progress already made to the game such as the shop system already implemented, the bios screen getting a face lift, a randomize character option, and Onet/Onnect’s lines being less sporadic (still a lil sporadic but a lot less than before). Depending on the votes, I’ll be working on redoing how the credits screen is laid out.
I’d like to also encourage again to join my discord server Expandyssey as I sometimes hold polls for minor things, and your votes can help me add good features and ditch bad features.
Thank you for your time, have a nice, safe, and fun day!
Howllo everyone! I originally wanted to get phase 1 out in May but wasn’t expecting how burnt I was from my Senior Design project since it turned into a “sink or swim” situation So to help with the stress I played on an MC server which supported custom character models, and of course I had to make my own. I decided as a spur of the moment (as of this post) that I could try seeing how easy it is to make a character using one of these model, and so far its a process of trial and error, so hopefully I can get figure out an easier way to do so as a method for the community to add their own characters. So try out my initial test with this DLC, and hopefully I can get some kind of update out before the jam starts, since I do like jammin!
Download the DLC on this page here! Along with a tutorial on how to add me in!
Thank you for your time, have a nice, safe, and fun day!
Happy to see you’re getting back into things! Question about the likely update, how much can we expect to see from it? No pressure or anything I’m just wondering
Apologies for the delayed response, but it’ll generally look like post 70’s description of Part 1. You’ll see a new character shop that you can purchase characters in with a new lil currency system and a revamped achievement menu where achievements are divided into games rather than being a giant wall of random icons. It’ll include some QoL improvements such as explaining what each of the card’s options in the options menu do, and visual improvements such as GUI feedback and Onnect’s lines actually working properly.
But due to how I have now divorced the characters from the achievements and how I reworked the achievements, players will unfortunately lose most of their progress. I say most because I’ve only figured out how to save the “Play X” style achievements. But the majority of them will need to be performed again sadly (:T) though now when going forward it will hopefully not need to be rewritten again.
This also goes for the character unlocks which will cause them to be locked due to the new shop system, but you should be able to get your favorite characters fast with the new Cheevos and Tokens currencies. Tokens are awarded from playing games, and Cheevos are awarded from Achievements, with harder achievements giving more Cheevos then easier ones.
Now that the development part of the Gain Jam is over, I can refocus on getting this version out and hopefully before the uni semester gets too hectic Xp
Btw, someone just uploaded a new Human Female character DLC you can all try out right now
