Forks: A Weight Gain Visual Novel (Cancelled, all assets posted for everyone)

IMO, I’d delay until the art is complete.

Partly because the game will be better for it, but mostly because no matter how clear you make it that the art is to be added at a later date, you’ll still get a constant stream of ‘I found a missing image bug’ messages :stuck_out_tongue:

I might be in the minority here but i wouldnt mind if you just dumped it as it lowkey and then patched in the cgs when its done.

I don’t mind either way, but i think it would most defiantly be worth it to stick out the wait for the art.

I’d favor a quick release.
How about dropping a zip in the comment section or something and label it as pre-release for testing purpose without updating the main channels yet (e.g. your first post in this forum or on itch.io?). This way, new players would still only get the final release and the ones hyped like us can enjoy the story already.

I for one intend to play it multiple times anyway.

Thanks for taking the time for this little update tho

I’m leaning towards a quick release with a disclaimer on missing CGs (gives us something to look forward to next release), but I wouldn’t be upset if a delayed release happens. Ultimately, do what makes you and your team happy. Last thing any of us want is for any burnout due to feeling inclined to rush out another demo you’re unhappy with, so take your time if needed. Also, might I suggest a poll if it remains undecided between a quick release vs. delayed release?

Yea if your worried about new players experiences just drop the placeholder here lowkey and then update the OP when the final update with the art is done

Personally speaking I’m more than willing to wait a little longer as I’ve waited longer for other random stuff not even half as good lol. I feel like most would enjoy the fuller experience with all the art pieces and you may even be able to add some other stuff you didn’t think you could’ve added in this update if you get the chance or work out a bug or two or whatever ya know? But no matter what choice you go with I’m still gonna be hyped we get to play this game again soon!

Great to hear it’s so close to done!

If you drop it early I won’t complain and I’d still enjoy it, but my vote is to wait for the art. I’ve already waited a while (no shade), waiting a bit longer for a better experience sounds best.

I’ll for sure play through it multiple times, but there’s something special about the first play when you don’t know what’s about to happen. hitting placeholder art during that first playthrough wouldn’t ruin it, but it’d definitely be better with the art.

I would definitely recommend waiting. I got burned out with Growth Academy because of how they push out updates despite missing CG’s, sprites, and even entire scenes. They seem to have an attitude of fixing things after the fact, and it feels like they want to put out content whether or not it’s ready. I would rather wait a while longer to get a complete product, than get something and wonder what I’m missing out on.

If you want to wait, just wait. Don’t knock on us who don’t mind seeing it early because you don’t have self control to wait till its finished

I don’t think anyone’s knocking anyone else. We all have differing opinions, but in the end, it’s entirely up to Tron and his team what they do

I would rather have the update now. Multiple weeks is not an insignificant amount of time and the game will remain incomplete whether or not Toro adds the new art.

I’ll happily play again next year to see everything that gets added by then but I think waiting would waste the hype we’ve been building for months

Jokes aside, take your time, you and your team, to wrap up the VN. I for one, can wait a little longer. :+1:

The reality is that game dev isn’t easy. People have varying opinions, wants, and levels of engagement. If the team puts out an update quick some people will be unhappy, if the team puts one out later some people will be unhappy. You can’t please every fan. I do think it’s probably worth it if tron and team don’t know what to do, that it’s best to do as @LurkingLemming suggested and make a poll. That way the team can get an idea of what the majority of the community feels is the best course of action and not just the loudest or most vocal of their supporters/fans.

Agreed. There is no obvious choice here

I would definitely play and enjoy an early release, but Forks has been in development for such a long time that waiting a little longer isn’t a big deal.

Mercy, 9 more replies! Thanks, everyone, for your input! I wish I could address it more directly, but I need to go to bed :sleepy:. Was up all evening making (what I think are) the finishing touches for the update. All routes are polished (enough) and seem stable, but nobody besides me has tested it.

I’m going to try something stealthy, as I’ll be crunched for time soon. I’ll be moving back in with my parents tomorrow as some builders fix the hole in my floor (exposing the concrete foundation) that I’ve been living with for the past ~4 months. I didn’t know they would start so suddenly. Work may take a month, during which I can’t guarantee when I’ll be able to upload big files like this in private (my parents’ internet sucks ). After this, I’ll see what I can do about uploading a final updated build (should Toro finish the art while I’m over there) and getting the Ren’Py Aria demo up as well.

I’ll post the updated Forks demo below, HOWEVER:

  • Do not play this if you would rather wait for the finished build, which should be ready as soon as Toro finishes the new art. Placeholder art is literally the second thing you see when first playing the game. When the final update’s ready, I’ll make sure you know!

  • It is missing the new planned art assets. Placeholders are used but I must stress that this particular build features no new art, only narrative. The final version will!

  • It has not been tested externally. Nothing seems to crash on my end, but I may’ve missed some bugs. Please let me know if you encounter any.

  • Because of this, I may be in a short cycle of fix → release → test → fix. Please don’t download this yet if you don’t want to worry about potential bugs.

  • Once the new art is finished and any missed bugs are squashed, I’ll update the main post, upload it to Itch, and publicize it as a proper update.

  • All of the planned new scenes for this update are included, so that’s nice!

If you’re feeling brave, here is the current updated Forks build: Click this!

This update tweaks and adds lots of stuff, and I’ll go into more detail at the proper release. If you want to speed through text you’ve already read, make sure to turn on “Skip Unseen Text” in the options menu. This is primarily a Hannah update (get on her route!), but Grace and Rea have a little new content as well. Enough to give you an idea of where their stories are heading short-term. Get on their routes if you want to see it.

I’m trying something new with this, it’s encrypted and Ren’Py says it’s a Windows/Linux/MacOS 3-in-1 that’s compatible with all three. Previously, I’d uploaded entirely separate Windows, Linux, and MacOS versions. It seems to boot fine on my Windows PC, but I haven’t been able to test anything else. If you use either MacOS or Linux, please let me know if this boots!

I’ll be back sometime tomorrow to check-in on things. To you brave testers: Enjoy! Hopefully I didn’t just set everything on fire :confounded:

Edit: Ha! Of course I stayed up to test this one more time, and I see I mixed up some cakeball/cinnamon roll dialogue. Nothing major, but I’ll put that on the to-do list!

Major hype to start but its like almost 5am and I’ll play it tomorrow but I like the new character UI that was implemented so far but that’s all I seen so far but super excited to play tomorrow! Thanks again for all the work you, toro and everyone else who puts so much time and effort in Forks I bet its gonna be great!

Sweet. Just to make sure it boots, I got up to the first ‘CG Goes Here’ screen and everything is fine so far. I’m Using Linux Mint 20 FYI. I can’t wait to play it properly when I get back from the gym. Thank you very much for the update, Tron!
