What's people's opinions on 3D models used in dating Sims?

Hello! I’ve always wanted to make a weight gain game, I’ve had the urge many times but never taken the leap due to my drawing skills, on paper fine, digitally my skills are awful. I’ve been thinking of the possibility of instead using blender to create models, it would be a useful skill to learn since I have a 3D printer and paint models. As an example of something similar in style house of beef comes to mind, but also wondering whether due to the nature of 3D models it would be easier to stretch out and change the models to gain weight. Not many people use 3D models so I’m asking:

  1. Do people enjoy 3D or would you rather it drawn?
  2. Is weight gain potentially much easier to make in 3D?

  1. People definitely love 3d. It’s not done too much so I think people are very interested when it’s used. It of course depends on the execution, but there’s certainly no preference against it.

  2. From what I’ve gathered through seeing other projects and my own attempts, 3d projects seem to be harder. You practically need to do the 2d art anyways to get good refs for the modeling, and rigging can get weird with larger characters. This is all assuming you don’t try to animate the characters which leads to more issues with clipping and animating size-changes. It all kinda depends on what kind of game too, so I could be blowing this out of proportion.

Yeah I wasn’t going to have anything animated, that would be far too much for me to learn, I might give 3D modelling ago and try and learn how to do that a bit but yeah may just have to go back to attempting to draw

I don’t mind 3D, but something thag I haven’t seen being raised much as a problem is how hyperrealistic models can look off-putting - at least for me having them resemble what a real person too much kinda makes me stop and contemplate what I am doing lol makes me feel wrong.

I will always take a stylized 3D model (like in an anime type for example) over a hyperrrealistic one, but that’s my preference.

in some ways 3d is easier and in others 2d is easier. though take what I say with a grain of salt since I don’t draw

when it comes to 3d a lot of effort is in just making a character model that you can use but when that is done then animating them is easier (with some exceptions). so to minimize the amount of effort put in to finished stuff out you would want few characters with lots of animations. if you want a lot of granular weight gain then 3d is better

3d also has an edge when it comes to reusing stuff. just a texture swap for example can give you a new character while doing the same in 2d would mean drawing in the new details in on every frame

With what the others have been saying, I’d recommend taking a Sims 2 and Going Immobile inspired style for character designs. Basically, go for something more stylized than realistic.
That way you’d have some leeway in design and a better chance at avoiding uncanny valley.
