Crusader Kings 2 - 3.0's weight gain

Clothing bursting and tearing are finally, finally done. They just need localization and ai chances defined and they’ll be ready. While they are fairly complicated event chains (under the hood, in appearance they are rather simple), I just had a lot of complications.

I’m briefly working on some of the potion events (self consumption) next, I’ll be finished with it very soon. Then I will get to work on the fetish events. While working on the potion events, I came up with an idea for something I’d like to do further down the mod’s development. I came up with a bloodline related to the use of potions.

I’ve come up with four bloodline ideas that I intend to make later (probably the update after 1.0). I wanted to list these here to organize my thoughts as well as take suggestions for other bloodlines as well. All of the bloodlines will give prestige benefits per month (like most others) as well as an event at age 16 that would allow characters to directly pick a fetish if they didn’t get one randomly assigned to them already. None of them will be mutually exclusive, but you will not be able to get more than one Fatocracy bloodline per character’s lifetime. Here’s what I’ve got for ideas so far:

  1. A generic fat bloodline if you’re character manages to get 1,000 weight level. Benefits would be a negation of the gluttonous trait’s stewardship penalty (yes this will stack with the potion). Spouses and consorts of characters with the bloodline will passively gain weight fairly quickly and get unique events related to this. You cannot get this bloodline on a character that has used weight gain potions on themselves (others can use potions on that character without disqualifying them though)

  2. A great hunter bloodline that is given to characters who have obtained the hunter trait (way of life dlc), has the “blob” body modifier and has hunted and eaten 100 weight level points out of animals they hunted (a new decision/event chain I’ll make for characters with the hunter trait or hunting focus). The benefits will be a complete negation of negative opinion of tribal characters. Bloodline characters will also gain 1 point of martial every other body weight level is achieved. As well as a constant +1 health as well as a negation of the obesity health penalty.

  3. Potion bloodline that’s obtained from using many, many weight gain potions on yourself and others (must use each potion type at least once). Every the time the weight pulse fires, characters that are part of the bloodline will receive a handful of weight gain potions and 1 of every other potion type. They will also always know how to get to the potion shop, so they won’t have to rely on random events to find it. Learning will also be boosted by 1.

  4. Dinner Date bloodline that you can get if you are taken on dinner dates as a guest 50 times (It can’t be from the times where you badger your partners to take you) and to take other characters on dates 50 times (you also need the blob body). You are going to want to take many lovers and consorts to get this one. One benefit is dinner date events will cost 50% less for characters with the bloodline. The opinion buffs for dinner dates will be doubled, and you won’t lose sex appeal opinion for being a glutton (nor will you care if other characters are gluttons)

Bloodlines require the Holy Fury DLC to be used. I’m looking forward to working on these after the 1.0 launch, but if you have any suggestions for other bloodlines it’d be very useful to hear them.

definitely add some base type bloodlines, something like:

titanic warrior: win 30 duels while (whatever weight class)

or some other base stat related stuff would be interesting

Seeing the bloodlines inspired my creative side. I like the idea of using bloodlines to make it so a character can have “fat genes”. It would create more opportunities to role play as characters who want to be in shape but get fat anyway. An example being a vain queen who diets and is super body conscious, but blimps out anyways because she was born into the wrong dynasty. My understanding is you can’t really have a character like this with the game as is because if they are dieting and exercising, they would lose weight.

There’s already a mod with fat genes (plus simulated genetics for other things), which I think I linked or alluded to before.

As for fighting against weight gain, the mod makes it very hard to actively lose weight in its current form and nigh impossible to be underweight. There is additional work that I would like to see balancing out the system before adding additional mechanics or ways to gain weight. This is especially concerning due to how frequently NPCs seem to acquire gluttony either on their own or via hardy diets.

Some of this issue might be reduced and/or made more immersive by;

  • Decreasing the chances of NPCs having a hearty diet (eg; have it tied to capital province prosperity)
  • Prevent characters being pinged for dates by several lovers at once or having a date right after a stuffing (or similar high-impact events)
  • Make it possible for NPCs to resist attempts to influence their diet (event chain?)
  • Make it far easier to lose weight at lower weight levels
  • Have a mirror decision for exercise regimes, so a character can have a hearty diet, but actively burn it off (provided they keep the willpower and ability to keep going)
  • Change the fattening captive event chain to progress more slowly and be tied to traits + fetishes

Bottom line, it should be possible to go up a size or two in a year, but barring fantasy events (which I hope will be optional or at least kept ‘low fantasy’ to fit with the rest of the game) you shouldn’t go from 0-50 with ease.

I do like the idea of Bloodlines related to dynasty weight ie; having an event chain for incredibly obese characters (provided they live long enough to see it out) or alternative paths for those actively making relatives (or their spouses) fat via interactions. When thinking about the possible effects it would have, I suggest looking at two existing things; the Meliorism religion feature and the Family bloodline with nagging events that allow those with the same bloodline to influence each other (yes, including weight).

Re; body part modifiers, I think some could be changed from their current forms to have more effects. For instance, having a fat belly shouldn’t buff health (if anything the opposite), but could have a positive impact on prestige and diplomacy (a sign of wealth and possibly intimating)

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to try and balance it out soon. I will be keeping stuff in the “low fantasy” category with the main mod. The potions are the furthest I will go into fantasy without needing supernatural content turned on in the options (and I’m still not sure if the potions should be included in that setting or not yet).

  • I still need to implement the NPC equivalent to working out (the one you can take after weighing yourself with appropriate traits. The player can lose 1 weight level every two months or so, I might make it 3 months), so the AI should be able to do something to a similar effect.

-I can easily make the light diet more appealing if characters are over a certain weight threshold (likely once you are in the range to get the pudgy body modifier) to make them more likely to take the diet. Dictating others diets will eventually carry with it an opinion penalty if you try it, I could make an event that only the AI sees that will determine whether they try to subvert your dictation or not. Balanced diets could also easily be used for balancing out your weight around the -20 to +20 range. I also quietly made it so balanced diets are chosen far more often, as well as made it so the AI is more likely to stick to whatever their current diet is (couple that with the other changes with the diet category and this should fix the problem from this aspect’s perspective.)

-The fattening captive event is pretty much completely outdated and will be pretty much scraped and restarted to be less rigid and less extreme. I’m thinking making it cost a little gold to increase their weight by 1 level, or for tribal/less well off characters, feeding your own meals to the captive. This would lower your weight by 1 level and raise theirs by 1. I also might give gluttonous and cruel characters the option to occasionally eat the prisoner’s meals causing the opposite effect.

  • The mirror decision idea is interesting, I might give it a try.

  • The dinner dates are already fairly rare occasions and will be needed for the one bloodline, but I could make it so the AI can refuse your dates like you can, which would cause a negative opinion modifier from the person who offered to the person that was asked (char. A = { -10 opinion with char.B } ). Simply lowering the chances of gaining the gluttonous trait and/or being taken on larger dates could also be implemented.

  • I never quite stated this anywhere, but the potion events can get quite extreme, but I can easily lock the extreme options behind a steep learning skill requirement (15 or so for the most concentrated form the weight gain potion and 10 learning skill for the second most concentrated). I could also add a “toxicity” variable that prevents you from taking to many potions at once.

  • I was planning to change the forms abilities later, mostly to add appropriate drawbacks to each of them. I will definitely be changing the belly form to a prestige bonus instead of a health buff.

Thank you for laying everything out to be cleanly read and understood. This has been very helpful for solving some of my balance issues :slightly_smiling_face:.

A quick, possibly off topic question: what is Meliorism? I’ve played a lot of ck2, but I can’t recall ever coming across that word before.

I’m glad my advice seems helpful.

Mostly, I’m trying to think of ways to make weight management/manipulation less hands-on and tie into roleplaying more because I don’t like having to click a window every 2 ingame weeks or press an event constantly whenever the timer expires.

I’m about a week off putting some time into planning & sharing event chain ideas/frameworks; I’m hoping to get some stuff shared over December and help out via writing.

The concept that progress is a tangible thing that can be influenced by man to make the world better than what it was naturally, i.e. human interference in affairs to make them suit their ideals better.

For this mod, that would be something along the lines of fattening up the county being shown as prosperity, or meddling in your courtiers’ diets to make them ‘better’. That is, all of the fun stuff :P.

It’s used to refer to the events tied to the ‘Stability’ feature of certain religions to force positive stat increases on characters at the cost of piety and prestige, unlockable by Reforming a Pagan religion. The specific events to look at are in HF_religious_events.txt - linked to HF.23760, though they are fired by a decision.

Note that one of the possible negative consequences of this decision is weight loss or gain…

Here’s a few of the misc. things I feel I should say/announce.

  1. I started working on rebalancing the diet decsions, I’ve done most of what I stated in the post above already.

  2. I’ve figured out what I’ll make the final potion. It’s going to be very a rapid, but temporary weight gain potion that will make it’s target very quickly bloat up until eventually immobile, resulting in a regency for a short amount of time. This potion itself will not add to the physique variable, (or if it does, it will not trigger the body shape events and the variable change will be subtracted once the event is over) Since this can be very powerful and exploited, the potion will be easily the most expensive one to buy by a significant amount, and will require a particularly high intrigue skill to use on a ruler (but no skill needed on those that don’t hold land). Yes there will be events if you or one of your love interests are the target. I’ve only come up with the concept for this one currently, so there is pretty much nothing related to this poion/trait in the mod yet. If people (or I) think it’s too silly, I’ll put this specific potion into the “super natural events” option, or maybe an options panel for my mod specifically. This will be the last fantasy aspect until at least after 1.0. Fantasy aspects are not going to be my main focus at any point during the mod’s development.

  3. I will also have to make it so that fetish’s can be removed and changed now, since I found a rather easy to do bug that can screw with the traits being changed. The fetish potions are the easiest way to do this. During an event where you can get a fetish if you, while the game is paused, drink the opposite fetish potion, will let you switch fetishes. This can cause some serious problems whenever a fetish trait is called on, which is pretty much all the time.

Okay I just thought about all I’ve done with the fetishes so far, and I think I’ve come to realize that nothing would necessarily break if you flipped between the two fetishes so long as any event/decision that is looking for the opinion modifiers “revealed fat fetish to me” and “revealed feedee fetish to me” also require the target to have the one of the corresponding traits. The only slightly rough element about it would be that the traits would become visible again if the character lost the original fetish and then got it back again later. For other mod authors, you would also need to be careful of making events that have an option requiring the fetish that leads to other events that also/only have options that require the traits to complete (so the game doesn’t get stuck with an event without any options). Also do not set flags relating to only one of the fetishes without having another event able clean them up in the background if you don’t have the fetish.

I’m not sure how to make it so the opinion modifiers will remove themselves if the original character no longer has the same fetish. It would need to happen to all characters, since being a lover, spouse, or consort isn’t necessarily permanent. I would like it to be cleaner, but I’m having some trouble figuring out how to do so.

Once I’ve gotten the potions for self consumption finished I’m going to put out my next update. I’m working on getting the last one, the rapid expansion potion, to have it’s basic functionality now. I’m also going preface the outline I have planned by saying again that this will be the last fantasy element in the mod until 1.0 is completed, and will likely be an optional setting.

I’m setting up the effect/events to be potentially used or called again later if I can think of another scenario for it (I’ve got a couple ideas, but those are for much later). At this point, however, it only can happen if you drink the potion yourself. You will then get a popup event with unique descriptions and options depending on how the event was triggered (only the self consumed potion right now), if it was your first time like this and whether or not you’ve had the event trigger in that way before. Female characters with the special body modifiers will also immediately receive another event that provides a new modifier that corresponds to their body type that replaces whatever body type modifier they had before (narratively this means that that part of their body got huge really quickly). The modifer provides the same benefits and drawbacks of their normal counterparts, but the magnitude is 2x stronger than their LV.5 modifiers (not as overpowered as you might think since I’ve added drawbacks to the modifiers now, and you’ll be put into a regency in about a week of the event chain starting). When you get immobile to the point of needing a regency, the “minigame” to get out of this state will start. The way it works is there will be an event with a few options that you will periodically have to take that will determine how fast or slow you get out of the event chain, using a variable as the timer for the event chain. Since we are dealing with what is essentially magic, I’ve decided to be a bit more liberal with logic with this event chain. The less you eat, the faster the event chain will end and the more you eat, the longer it will last. However, if you start skipping meals to make the event end quicker you will start getting modifiers that will lower your health (this is especially dangerous since the trait you get already compromises your health by -1). Eating more will get you extra health, but you will be in a regency for longer. There will be 4 options each time the main event fires:

  1. Maintain the normal course that will lower the variable by a decent amount with no health modifiers.

  2. Skip meals to lower the variable by a lot but at the cost of getting negative health modifiers.

  3. Eat extra meals to lower the variable by only a little but also getting a modifier that improves your health while you are like this.

  4. Gorge yourself to an extreme degree that will actually raise the variable and provide the same health benefits option 3 has. (this option is for players who want to see more of the flavor events for this state. Only feedee AIs will ever choose this.)

The future for this event chain: There will be future flavor events for this state for the victim, spouses, lovers, vassals, adult aged children of the victim, and courtiers. You are still growing “fatter” while immobile, so if you take too long to slim down, you will start getting flavor events referencing it as well as getting a bloodline if it lasts about 50 turns. A second variable that will be used to calculate your normal weight gain/weight loss after you are done with the event. Other ways to get into this state I’ve thought of are getting someone else to drink the potion (this method will be in the mod later for certain), hunting and eating a mythical animal while you have the hunting focus, a supernatural plague (think of the dancing plague), and a spell using the luxuria fantasia magic system. The other methods WILL be optional, but the potion ones are a tossup.

For the bloodline, I’m thinking of having characters with the bloodline randomly swell up into this state occasionally, but with the benefits being eating less will not give health penalties and will be twice as effective in lowering the variable as before. Also they will not get a health penalty for having rapidly gained weight. They will also get more flavor events that have positive outcomes while swelled (like removing stressed/depressed, or adding the patient trait.)

I’m open to any criticism if you have any.

After years of owning CK2 this mod finally inspired me to give it a proper go and so far I’m loving it. Seeing all my descendants slowly fall into decadence adds some flavor to ruling the game. Do you have plans on adding traits for some of the other races in LF like what was done for nekos?

Most the issues I have the with the mod sound like they are getting fixed in the coming updates. It can be really difficult to not turn into a blob as a female that has interacted with a tentacle given how often the tentacle force feeding event triggers. Id love to see a secret society similar to the “Society of seduction” that revolved around around decadence and corrupting others into a hedonistic lifestyle.

This project has quickly become The project I’m most interested in and I’m excitedly awaiting the next update.

Yes I will be tweaking the tentacle events to be much less overbearing, I’m thinking of only having one event that only triggers if you have any kind of tentacle pregnancy trait. You would still get fat eventually (maybe not on rare or mythical tentacle settings unless you actively seek them out), but not overnight like it is currently. Thank you for the idea of a society that pushes people into decadence and hedonism, that’ll probably be the first society I make. As for the other races, I’m heavily considering making some events for the Kitsunes (They’ll probably be more on the negative side vs. the Neko’s positive reacion). I would have made a few events for werewolves too, but they aren’t around anymore. I’ll probably add a basic metabolism for the other races too (Tentacle monsters and ghosts being immune, orcs and dragons being much less prone to weight gain, Elves and divines being slightly less prone, Kitsunes and Nekos being neutral, Fairies being slightly more prone, demons and tentacle born girls being much more prone.)

Wait, what? Has that always been in this mod? This is one of those things I’d need to have supernatural events on for, isn’t it?

Nope, it only appears if you have the Tentacled Dreams installed though and got pregnant from a tentacle encounter. Completely optional as it’s simply an event that appears if you have the mod installed if it’s not your thing.

Sounds good. I usually play with supernatural events off. Once had a run of something like three rulers out of five die to the chess game with death, and I’ve had two playthroughs derailed and ruined by the bloody Devil Child event.

Just was wondering what, if anything, I might be missing.
