Eat The Dungeon General Discussion

I feel like this is a dumb question, but has anything been added/tweaked besides the engineer and the buff changes?

From what I can tell no, though there seemed to have been a slight issue about the items you can bring into combat ( a minor bug fix, but other wise no changes in game play).

Is it just me or do load times seems extremely slow for the recent update.

This wouldn’t be terribly difficult from an implementation perspective, but I think the characters are easier to design stat/gameplay wise if I add them one at a time. I make decisions about character’s stats in relation to content that’s already in the game. Dropping a dozen unknowns into the design would be difficult.

So 3 months ago, I made a post talking about a rough summary of each character and how good they are In my opinion, However, I only really said if they were ā€œgoodā€ or ā€œbadā€. Since then I’ve had the idea of possibly showing a list of rankings, including Engineer, who wasn’t released when I made the summary post. I will be showing them from lowest to highest, as well as a comment as to why I ranked each character in the spot that I did. (Please keep in mind, this is based entirely on my own opinion and is not at all meant to possibly insult what others think about each character)

9.Witch. Don’t get me wrong, Witch is good, no doubt that, and if I’m being honest, one thing that I can praise this game for is that even with 9 characters in now, while sure some are better than others, everyone is good; no one is truly ā€œbadā€. The issue is that Witch is just outclassed, outclassed the most of any character. Only having 1 type at all, Attack or Support, just isn’t cutting it anymore when now we have Illusionist who has a second attack type in sneak, and an even bigger AOE. While sure, Witch is faster, if you want fast magic damage, you can just use SpellBlade instead.

8.Priestess. For a while, Priestess was competing with Knight, from how similar the 2 were. Priestess was slower, but had a higher range and slightly higher base power, along with the heal support type, which I find to be more overall useful than Armour, while Knight was faster, slightly lower base power an a small offensive AOE, along with Armour instead of heal. The Problem is that a side effect of the most recent update to include Engineer, who has an AOE support, is that now Knight’s AOE applies to her own support, not just for offence, and this buff has genuinely now made it to where Knight is for sure better than Priestess, making her outclassed.

7.Warrior. Weapon is a good type to have offensively, it’s the second most common enemy type in the game, after all. The problem is that Warrior is offensively outclassed by both Thief and SpellBlade, who both are faster and have a second attack type, being sneak for Thief and magic for SpellBlade. Thankfully for Warrior she has the Armour Support type, meaning she has that option opened up for her. While even as a support character, Warrior isn’t necessarily too much to speak of, she does have the lowest base speed of any character who can use a support, meaning when it comes to support, she’s the fastest, and that it is definitely something noteworthy when support in this game can be valued so highly.

6.Thief. Thief was the best character in the game when Eat The Dungeon was first released, and has held up pretty well since. Being tied for the lowest base speed and access to fast sneak damage means that Thief will almost always be relevant in some way. For me, the issue here is that she’s a little outclassed by SpellBlade, Who shares the same speed level that Thief has, and has magic instead of sneak, and magic is a significantly more common attack type than sneak is (in fact, as of when this was written, there isn’t a single level in the entire game that doesn’t have any enemies that aren’t susceptible to magic, every level has at least 1). Thief was originally much higher on my ā€œlistā€, but the introduction of Engineer and Knight’s buff has brought Thief down a notch for me.

5.Knight. I mentioned Knight quite a lot when I was during Priestess’s section, and I’m not going to say most of it here, because I think that would just be too repetitive. Was decent before the buff, great after the buff, now possibly being to support 2 character at once. Her base speed is pretty good too, just being a little slower than Warrior. In a earlier post they made, Shugoki mentioned that Knight went from Zero to Hero with this update and buff, and if I’m being honest, I agree with that greatly.

4.SpellBlade. One of the best. Weapon and magic are so common between each level, with the other 2 being surprisingly rare, and there are surprisingly few levels the SpellBlade can’t just easily solo, with needing some support at times (I counted, there are only 7 of the current 30 levels that SpellBlade can’t solo). No other characters can say this, and keep in mind, SpellBlade is also really fast, being tied with Thief for being the fastest. While not The best, SpellBlade is still Absolutely Amazing.

3.Engineer. The newest character added to Eat The Dungeon, and a good one at that. The first thing one would notice are her Move Types; Buff and Armour, meaning she can only Support and can’t attack at all for good damage, similar to Bard before her, except Engineer has Armour instead of Heal. If I’m being honest, being locked into only being able to support isn’t necessarily a bad thing in a game such as Eat The Dungeon, where support is pretty much necessary on almost every team composition. While some of these my also apply to other support characters, I’m only really going to Compare Engineer to Bard, since that’s who Engineer is easily the most similar to. I already mentioned the different Support type in Armour/Heal, and other than that, there is what makes Engineer stand out the most; her AOE support, which would have been unique to her, if Knight didn’t get one as well. Regardless, Engineer’s AOE can help all 3 other party members, instead of a max of 2 for Knight. However, once again comparing her to Bard, this AOE comes at a price. A small amount of Base power (only 1 though, which isn’t a big deal), and a very noticeable amount of speed. Engineer is actually now slower than Witch, making Engineer the second slowest in the game, yet still doesn’t even compare to how slow the #1 is in that area, but I’ll get to her later. While still on this topic, Engineer IS however the #1 character that can support. slowest I mentioned this in a quick post earlier, but I really like these differences from Bard. The AOE, yet noticeable speed drop makes it to where they balance out. While I can differentiate who I think is overall better, neither really outclasses the other. There are Situations to use Bard, and Situations to use Engineer. Also, I actually find Armour to be surprisingly useful on an AOE. More so than I think Heal would be. Overall, Engineer is a fantastic new addition, and I’m happy to have her.

2.Illusionist. When I made my summary post 3 months ago, I said that I thought Illusionist was the best character in the game, and judging by her current position now, that opinion has changed. It’s not that my opinion of Illusionist has gone down, because it hasn’t, but that my opinion of another character has gone up. Anyway, onto the actual Character herself, Illusionist is interesting. Her Positives are amazing, while her Negatives are really bad as well. Her attack types are magic, which is common af, and sneak, which while mostly on the rare side, comes in handy at times, and at least we now have more than than just 1 source of it. Her biggest positive by far, is her massive AOE attack. Illusionist can damage every single enemy in the room at once, something that no other character can possibly do. As I mentioned earlier, her Downsides are really bad and noticeable, which are her base stats. Not only does Illusionist have the lowest base power of any character with 0, she is also By Far the slowest character in the entire game. Without any speed upgrades, Illusionist’s speed clocks in at an astonishing 7.2 seconds, and that’s without any weight added whatsoever. With downsides like that, Illusionists may just seem decent at best, but the thing is, with a little help from other party members, those base stats can be made irrelevant. With support, Illusionist’s speed can mean almost nothing, since as long as the support user’s power is high enough to complement to low, speed, just use a support on Illusionist once, and she’ll instantly be able to attack again. Bard and Engineer on the other hand, can do this even better, since their buff support type means that they can nullify the low power as well as the speed (while sure the power thing can be negated completely anyway with upgrades, the speed is still an issue, even with max investment, and this is still something I should bring up). Overall, while near useless on her own with her base stats, with some support, Illusionist’s potential is extremely high and can clear out a high number of levels within Seconds with some help.

1.Bard. For a while, I did think that Illusionist was the best. I never doubted Bard or anything, no, not even for a second, but it still feels like it took me a while to realize how good and useful Bard is. Even before, is was still rare that I found myself not bringing Bard along into each level, and she rarely let me down (although I suppose she would have whenever she gets KO’d, but that doesn’t count because that can happen with literally every character). At the same time, it kind of also was because of Illusionist that made me realize how good Bard was. I more or less started to ask myself: Illusionist pretty much needs support to function; who most easily provides her with that support? For me at least, the answer was without a doubt Bard. But with Bard being a ā€œsupport only characterā€, it’s not just Illusionist that Bard greatly helps out. It’s everyone. And while sure, Engineer is out now, who has her AOE but lower speed, I still think Bard is overall better for her single targeting higher speed support, as that to me makes her far more consistent than Engineer, and being consistent to me is very important for an only support character. Overall if you want my opinion on this, Bard is not only one of the best, but THE #1 Character.

So now. With all that in mind, what I want to know is: what’s your opinion? What would your ranked list be? Why? even if you can’t rank all 9 characters, what would your #1 be at least, and Why? I won’t judge you for thinking differently than I do. I just want to know your honest opinion.

I still say that Thief is the best in terms of damage. As a group, I usually use Thief, Priestess, Witch, and Illusionist. Thief takes out most of the enemies by attacking extremely quickly, while Illusionist and Witch do the room clearing and heavy damage and the Priestess empties any KO or near-KO characters.

Curious, do you plan to update the title screen with new characters like you did the Bard?

I know this isn’t in the schedule but maybe alternate costumes could be implemented after the story. The alternate costumes could start with a simple colour swap on the clothes. The next one could be bras (even though a few already have almost no clothes in their final weight stage XD). Finally you could implement the characters that didn’t make the cut into costumes. Either as a colour swap to represent them or using their actual designs. If this would be too difficult then you could reference other forms of media i.e. for the witch you could make a costume representing the wicked witch of the west. How the costumes could be gotten would either be via fatness or after you have upgraded a character a certain amount.
I think this could the game a bit more variety and make it so that there is more things to get after completing all the levels.

NGL I’d kinda rather see the characters we have in alt costumes rather than the losing designs. They could come in themed bundles–lingerie, swimsuits, school uniforms, cosplay, whatever BA decides–and the art can just be traced over the normal artwork so it’s easier to make without it looking weird. Alternatively, it could come behind a mastery system, which rewards you for using a certain character more.

Alt costumes isn’t likely to happen any time soon, since the work to add an alt costume is tantamount to adding a completely new character. I think adding new characters is more important. I’ll reconsider this once all the playable characters are in game.

Currently trying to get the illusionist to at least 1 million weight. a bit over 3/4 of the way there atm. I normally do this sorta stuff by lowering the aoe attacker’s cooldown with a priestess who’s power stat is 104 and is at a high enough weight that her attack stat is doubled. I use another support to reduce the priestess’s attack cooldown. The engineer has been very helpful for this. Normally, I use the bard, and with the 62 attack stat bard plus a 208 attack priestess, I can keep using this setup up until the illusionist’s cooldown is about 270 seconds. The engineer has aoe support, so she reduces the illusionist’s attack cooldown by 132 while also reducing the priestess’s cooldown and then i use the priestess to remove another 270 seconds. which means i can keep this up up until the cooldown is 400 seconds. I’ve started putting all the weight extracted into the speed stat for the illusionist, so i managed to get the cooldown to around 270. Now i can use the bard for this again and get a bit more weight on the illusionist per run

Finally got the illusionist to 1 million weight. Wanna keep going and see how high i can get her weight, although i’ll probably stop with this until new levels are added, since there may be a better level to farm weight on among them.

A bloody four minute cooldown even when it’s nearly been cut in half. Holy bloody hell, mate.

yeah it only becomes less of a bother when you fully max out speed at 95% but if not you need things with insane amounts of power
