Mochi Moshi! [Active Development]

That’s the idea but it’s far off from when that’ll happen. I don’t know how I want to go about that and I also don’t want to think about it yet Hahaha.
As for a demo, what that will consist of will also be TBD.

I do want to hammer down why I’m not public about the game’s creation and why it’s all behind a paywall.

The game has been in development for four years as of July 31st of this year and I’ve been making progress steadily since then. Not all progress is visible and if I showed everything publicly it would show my hand with what I want to do. Keeping it paid means that people who really want to see it, support me directly (as I make basically nothing doing art month by month) and get rewarded on the insider look of this project. Am I making this game for money? No. Why not release it for free? Because I’ve spent too much of my life on this game and it’s been eating up too much of my time to not be rewarded with something that’s needed to keep my life going.

So why not show progress more often? I thought I was being generous showing my prototype images in here and letting people know that this is a real game with real thought but apparently that’s not enough to some folks and I might understand that, impatience and thinking you’re getting scammed, even if it’s not your money, might be on your mind, the world is fucked up right now, this might be the greatest con of the fat fetish community or whatever. I just want to work on my game and keep things in my pocket and when it comes out people go “wow this was worth the wait” or “meh, I mean I see why it took so long but it’s just a visual novel.”

My co-writer and I worked on the 60k+ script for three years, that’s been the bulk of development, that’s a novel in itself spanning 24 endings all written consistently as two characters who have a tight friendship-- you can’t really show off a script you’ve been writing en-mass without giving the entire game away. I’ve shared snippets of writing privately and for paid viewers, I even had a prototype that was playable for a month that subscribers had to opt in to play just to keep this stuff locked up tight. I care about my game and I want to keep it’s development private except to those who care enough to support artists like me.

I know not everyone has money, I’m poor too, grew up in poverty and I still make less than minimum wage with two jobs total. I don’t expect people to give me money. If no one gave me money you wouldn’t hear about this game until it was done. The reason I update this forum every month is to let people know the game still exists and that I want folks who think that I’ve run off with funds to see that, yes I think about this more than you do. I think about it every single day and making a game takes a lot of time and I know you’re antsy about it. There’s so many other games on this website that deserve your attention as well and you should support them too. And while I appreciate folks airing their skepticism I do actually think your comment struck a cord with me. I have nothing to prove to you. You can find your answer easily by giving me money. Hope the single screenshot was good enough but if you want to know find a way into my patreon. I’m sure some heartless dipshit leaked old logs on “”“”““backup websites””“”“”".

Will Mochi Moshi be worth supporting? Yes, I can’t say no because it’s my game. Will Mochi Moshi come out? Unless I die, Yes. Have I had problems with development? Nothing I’ve not figured out the next day. Are you actually a game developer? I’m a software developer with a BA in computer science with a business concentration. Should I have left this large forum post? Nah, but I think it’s worth speaking my mind.

I’m proud of what I’ve done and every month I look forward to telling people about what I’ve done and what I want to do next, people close in my life and people who support me directly. So please be kind to me, you don’t have to give me money, just take me at my word or I’ll just never post on this site until the game is out man… I don’t have to do this shit. Talk to me like an equal.

Okay, definitely a lot to unpack here…

I get wanting to keep things under wraps for the sake of the story and overall excitement, but as you said, you’ve been working on this project for several years now without as much as a playable demo for the public, and that doesn’t inspire much confidence generally, especially from a developer who hasn’t had a big project like this until now so forgive me for showing skepticism at the start.

Can this prototype even be accessed by people who donated to the crowdfunder? Even though I am not one of the people who sent money to the project initially, i can’t help but feel like they’ve been getting especially since -

This answer struck me as quite odd. Even though I am not a direct supporter, I am not obliged to be given an answer in regards to the game that is currently being financially paid for? From the sound of it, you’d have to be a subbed patreon to even be in the know of upcoming information of the game, which means that you’re already getting monthly payouts on a game you’ve already fully funded for -

which is a dollar number that reaches in the THOUSANDS, so forgive me for prodding the subject matter which happens to go beyond a passion project at this point. That being said -

I’d argue to an extent, you do at least owe the crowdfunders here at least a means of communication and a way of being in the know aside from being subscribed to your patreon. Had it not been for weight-gaming, your project would not have been funded up to the monumental goals that it had set for itself. And don’t get me wrong, people here do want to see you and your game succeed, but it would be nigh-impossible to have that without giving some crumbs back to the people who have supported you from the start without having to be subbed to your patreon (and without using illicit 3rd party websites because thats gross).

Again, not trying to start a fight but posts like what you put out a few hours earlier are a step in the right direction. Monthly text posts regarding the game are nice but I feel like we’re a bit late in the development that snippets of the project could be beneficial in keeping interest in the visual novel at the very least, and getting community input and feedback which is huge.

I do think people who have fundraised the project should at least get a copy of the full release, but that’s something for you to settle with them. Otherwise, that’s all my thoughts I have on the matter. Hope you can take some of the feedback to heart.

You’re so annoying. Why do you care about a game you’re not even supporting trying to moral highground about funding and money as if you know how much money this game has even generated? Do you know how developing a game works? I’m not even collecting enough to pay bills and yet I work on it every single month. No one publicly needs to know anything about this game until it’s out. I owe no one anything except making a game and putting it out there. If people who have initially funded the drive 4 years ago approach me and want to have a conversation, that’s a different story, you haven’t put anything into this and you’re coming to me with a list of demands like I owe you something.
Who are you talking for what the fuck are you talking about?
Everyone who wants to know about this game is getting the information they want to know and you’re in here like “yes I would like to know people aren’t getting scammed.” Like what is your goal here? Can we go back to having this be about my game instead of some ethics check of whether I’m talking about this enough for people who have given me money by someone who has NOT GIVEN ME MONEY? Think what you want of me for my response, I don’t care. Everyone else has been kind enough and deserves to see how the game is going. I’ll make another public post about the game’s progress that’s text only and people will go “yay, glad to hear the dev is thinking about the game,” instead of someone going “You took a lot of money from these people, how much longer until your fatty wank game gets made.” This isn’t a debate, this is an artist talking about something they’re creating and thinking you have somewhere to stand when you’re just a third party who’s snooping around. If you cared enough you wouldn’t have approached this with such animosity. You don’t give a fuck man, why should I give a fuck what you think.

I’m not making this game for you, I’m making this for my co-writer, my fans and myself. You’re nothing of these people clearly.

Yummy, i want to tell you this. From one development hell dev to another. I know it frustrating when this happens. I have paid your patreon to view what you have made. I will say, what you’re making right now is amazing and has so much potential. I’m serious, your game has a very high production value.

But you also need to remember that a lot of people have funded to make your game dream a reality. 4 years is a long time, especially in the world of fetish gaming. So many things have come and gone, and people want to know if they made a worthwile investment or were scammed. Your game development has a lot of similarities with Omocat. An artist who wanted to make their game a reality and realized way too late that they bit off more than they could chew and went through almost a decade of development hell as backers got increasingly frustrated and felt like they’ve been scammed.

I understand if this makes you angry. I understand that my words might not resonante with you. All I’m asking is for you to consider the people who gave you money to make this game. They saw your dream and wanted it to come true, in a record amount. Don’t make yourself get lost in the weeds over pushbacl against your ideas. Make sure your backers know that things are happening, not with just your words alone but with proof of images and text and storylines. Show your backers that you have made something special and grand and not say that you have. Your game is amazing, i have seen the work you have put in it in your dev diaries. So please, make this count

I’ve been following on Weight Gaming for all these years, please don’t abandon this site. I always looked forward to the monthly updates, it’s a nice way to know how the project’s going and I enjoy the focused feeling towards the game compared to other socials. I know you’re making something great!

coming off just a tad pretentious here, mate

Wow…dude needs to learn to take criticism. Ive not supported the game, that I’ll admit for 2 reasons. 1 this page gets buried with soo many other projects i keep forgetting about it and when i remember i assume its dead. 2 i cant see any actual substantial progress without paying. I get not wanting to get things spoiled but surely old information months old is fine to share.

Calling someone annoying and and taking your ball home is kinda embarrassing. Its ok to not like what they say. You can dislike what i say. But for anyone new wanting to support its a bad look.

Kind of crazy that after four years of development, all the public gets is one uncolored-potentially-temporary-art screenshot of the main character and part of the UI. As someone who has supported game devs on Patreon, this feels like a big red flag in terms of supporting Mochi Moshi, especially if it was supposedly “fully funded” four years ago

Id just ignore these guys and continue working on your game mate. Responding to them and arguing this case is just gonna make things worse, no one is gonna admit their wrong here so what’s the point in arguing?

Oh not again with this scam scaremongering.

All it takes is one look at Mange’s Patreon to see that this is far from a scam. There’s been monthly updates on the game’s progress, the last two of which even had video demos, on top of all of the art they’ve been drawing (this is important, the Patreon isn’t just for the game). This is just a developer who’s way in over their head and has probably experienced a few cases of scope creep over the last four years.

When you’re making an indie game for a dedicated audience, especially a VN, you have two options for release: drip-feed the content as it’s being developed or hold out until the end and release it all in one go. Both methods have their risks. Drip-feeding is more common, and it assures people the game is being worked on, but it can also lead to unreasonable expectations for each update to be bigger and better. Holding out avoids that, but can lead to what’s happened here.

Now I’m not going to claim that the public engagement has been perfect, but I do see where Mange is coming from in regards to what can be shown ahead of release. When the majority of your game is writing then there isn’t much that can be shown that won’t be major spoilers. And since the writing (from what I can tell) has taken precedence over every other aspect in terms of development time then that compounds matters further.

That said, keeping what little has been shown behind a paywall certainly wasn’t the best idea. Personally, I would have released those sneak-peaks ~1 month after posting them to Patreon to keep everyone else engaged. With only a few concept pieces and a singe screenshot in-game here it’s easy to see how some people would have misgivings about its legitimacy. Doubling down after someone challenged that only serves to make people more suspicious.

I know tensions are high here, and the community seems eternally paranoid of scams (I swear if I see another post about Fill Me Up…), but can we please at least consider other reasons for why a game hasn’t released before immediately jumping to the worst conclusion? Jumping down everyone’s throats the moment a concern is raised is just going to drive people away, developers and players.

And in case anyone wants to call me a shill, I didn’t donate to the Kickstarter and I’ve never subbed to Mange’s Patreon. I have no financial stake in this.

Also @mrtdum_222 painting yourself as a saint whilst simultaneously accusing someone else of being a scammer isn’t going to win you any internet points. You just come across as a prat.

EDIT: I removed the scam accusations. They were excessive and wrong, I admit it, and I apologize. Still the developer in my opinion is not behaving well.

Ngl kinda big saddened that the game that “will be 100% free” turned out to not actually be 100% free, but then again you can’t really see 4 years into the future. I’ll be at peace knowing that at least it should release, that’s sadly a rare occurrence here

Dev do be giving “streamer mocking viewer for not giving them money” vibes tho
Which isn’t a good look

A part of me wishes tension’s wouldn’t have to be so high with everyone being alert for scams (myself included). However, this community’s been burned time and time again with different game devs who feature a promising game, start up the patreon/subscription-service machine, and somewhere along the line, things go south for whichever reason. And there are many examples like this that don’t include Fill Me Up, but I’m not interested in starting a witch hunt or giving a shout out to these games. But anyone who’s been here long enough knows the culprits I speak of.

Anyhow, apologies if it seems like I’m adding to the “scam scaremongering,” but this is how things sadly have to be on the forum until the admins and moderators decide it’s something worth policing themselves to help give more peace of mind and protection for its users.

My man. I logged in just to say: “calm down”. @laphometsu was so polite and apologized after every word. All he wanted to express was that those who supported the game could simply get information outside of Patreon. I have been following the game’s progress for quite some time now, and I would even have supported the development if you had made a post here. However, I couldn’t do so due to my financial situation. Anyway, I just want to say that you shouldn’t snap at people for simple feedback. You can simply swallow it and forget about it if it’s unpleasant for you. Those who haven’t supported have their reasons for this and people patiently waiting for this to come out 4 years.

So, for those on the “side” of @laphometsu I think y’all need to chill and back up. One very important detail none of you seem to be figuring is that @jarringmange does have qcrive subscribers, and NONE of them have come by to complain about the content upfates posted over on patreon. If you look at the thread for FMU, there are plenty of people who subscribed to the creator’s patreon and came back to complain and verify the lack of updates and communication. Not a single voice has posted a complaint here about the patreon in terms of having actually paid and not thought they got their money’s worth, felt it was a scam, or even a single complaint really. You can bet that if I was a subscriber and I felt something was off, I’d come say something. On top of that, the dev has been consistent in communicating and there hasn’t been inconsistency in what they do reveal. For the claims of “well it’s taking a very long time!”, surprisingly, when gamr devving isn’t able to pay all your bills, you tend to focus more on keeping a roof over your head and food on your table. The subscribers help take some of that burden off and give more time to the dev process, but it’s definitely not enough to replace a full time job.

I think the only thing @jarringmange is really guilty of is ‘first game of this scope’-itis. Things have clearly grown past what they originally envisioned, and they have continued to strive and complete what they really want to put out. This means that they probably didn’t have a great, realistic, time table to offer people, and also didn’t have a reason to not keep expanding the project to fit their expanding vision. They have supporters who enjoy the updates rhey recieve, and the scope has expanded to require further investment, which they have been transparent about and informed us here.

I also think that, despite the ‘polite tone’ given in accusatory posts, the act of claiming that the projrct and all the effort put into it for the past several years is fake, the passion is fake, and the dev(s) are liars trying fleece people of their money is going to be a pretty mean slap in the face, regardless of the wording and tone used to put it out. In the end, you can state your doubts, but when you lack the vital pount of view as an actual subscriber, please don’t accuse people.

Im on his side based on public information. I didnt think its a scam but noy seeing any actual substantial updates even if its old information kinda effects how some will feel and whether they support or not. It being a pay to find anything out is my issue. I believe the game will eventually come out but its poor advertising for the game imo

I wish I knew.
From the creators reaction it seems as if they have been accused of scamming and has left the site because of it.

I looked forward to their updates…
