Some wiki stuff (Feedback Requested)

I haven’t seen an official announcement yet, but it can be found at the user maintained list of games

disclaimer this is what I, Izzyao, a normal user here, am doing. Not a site wide plan, not an announcement from anyone with any kind of power.
If you want to add your voice to all of this. PLEASE DO, I highly encourage it. That’s why I made this post to begin with.

For those that have missed it so far, the wiki has been opened for the community.
Of course, a lot of games still need to be put on there, and as such I’ve been trying to make a dent in this task.

I’ll slowly keep chipping away at this, but since it’s a community wiki I’d at least like to ask some input and feedback.
I’ve been trying to build a bit of a template for myself, and keep myself to that template on all the pages I create. A good example can be found here

In general, across all pages, information will still be missing. I’ll be missing tags, I’ll be wrong on some information (I do try to keep the mistakes at a minimal, of course)
I think that’s okay. My goal is to take the bulk, get everything out there (at a decent quality) and move onto some further refinement after. if I wanted perfection on every page right now I’d be burned out by the time I’d reach the 10th game.

Now my real questions. What information do we want on here? aside from what I’ve put down so far. (I’m definitely forgetting something obvious… I can feel it…)
I was thinking of walkthroughs, known bugs, roadmaps (of course, only for the games where these things apply)
And how do we want to give this shape? I quite like my current template, but I’m no designer in any shape or form, so if anyone has some input on that I think right now would be the easiest moment to work it in.

breathes in
ANYWAYS
while you guys take your time reading that wall
I’ll be off creating another wiki page

Just to be clear.
Yes, I am human.
No, I have not played every single game.
I’m making HEAVY use of the forum in finding tags and stuff. So if there is a game you really like and there is a page for it, do check my info, and feel free to either shout at me or change it yourself

Gonna bump this for those that haven’t spotted it yet but might want to give some input.

Knocked down some more last evening, will continue later today (probably)

Looking at the sheer amount of things to document, and the fact not everything is as easily available as other things, I’ll be cutting this into phases for myself.

Phase 1 (here now):
Main goal: exist.
Just creating a page for everything. These pages must contain at least developer name, some links (forum page, game page) and an image.
Also just using the general current template. → I am currently not touching any pages made by others unless I have permission from them.
Will likely do more than this, but if it’s missing for now, so be it.
Taking it with an “if 90% has this”, just to account for the games that don’t really have an image to put in (like some Twine text adventures)

Phase 2:
Main goal: exist. But with a fully filled basic info template.
Once everything has a page, I’ll move onto some more details
Double checking any extras I’ve filled in while in phase 1, filling in those I have missed.
Will also try to contact some creators during this time (possibly some during phase 1 as well, depending on how long that takes) to help me out with factchecking, and fill in some wishes they might have for the wiki page of their games.

Phase 3:
Main goal: fun stuff
At this point we should have basic, filled in, pages for every game.
Here we could go through the completed games and fill those out with things unique to that game (walkthroughs anyone?)
Also maybe some other extra stuff aside from the basics, depending on what we want (character list?)

And from that point onwards, we should be fairly good, assuming we use the pages and change them accordingly once in a while.

Looking at the example template, I honestly think that it’s great. I don’t think I have any notes or recommended changes other than an agreed upon spot for screenshots, but that can also just be page specfic. You’re doing gods work right now.
I assume you’re doing it alphabetically and including any playable game on the forum right?

Great template. It’s also easy to use even for a first time wiki editor. Love your plan for progress. All in all: good job!

This is amazing, and thank you. This is absolutely a perfect use-case for the wiki and a great way to build a more-functional resource than the forum itself is capable of. If I had more time, I’d be trying to do something similar with games-creation tutorials and asset packs. As it stands, just… great work. Thank you so much.

Yes! I’m currently just going through the user maintained list of games, should at least have most games with that, and go hunting afterwards.
Screenshots is a good one, I’ll be sure to keep that in mind

this would absolutely be amazing to have as well, maybe a good future project!
I’m sure we can find some good resources and put them together eventually

about a week further, with 104 pages created so far, and almost finishing off the user maintained list of games, I’m taking a small break… by writing this.

Some pages are extremely barebones, some are decently filled out. Just as I said they would be.
It’s taking a while to get through everything, which is good! It would be a shame if like 10 years or so of games could be indexed in a week.
However, a lot of games that should be on this list, are not. I’ll be ignoring those for now, making notes on where I found them.
I’ll be sticking with the list mentioned for now. Once I have a page for everything, I’ll be doing a consistency sweep.
Making sure links are consistent, capitalizations on certain things etc.
it’s the small things, but I want to keep it coherent now I still can.

After the consistency sweep, I’ll slowly go through the games and finish off their basic info.
I’ll try my best to fill in the tags as well, but I expect those will change once in a while for, well, a while.
also not necessarily including playtime guesses, I just don’t have those most of the time, and it’s not gonna be realistic to play every game and time them on a normal gameplay time if I’m also hunting for tags and themes.

and that should just about be the update I have for now!
also want to thank the few people that have created 1 or 2 pages with my template! I’ll be taking them in for the consistency sweep (might change a capitalization or so somewhere), but just taking a peek at them, the basic info seems to be all there, so I’ll just leave that as it is!

now for a good cup of tea and another wiki page, cheers!

Another good set of games to sweep is any game made under the game jams. I doubt all of them are in the user maintained list, and there’s a good chunk of them.

The eternal project continues.

Decided to just consistency check while I fill in everything, rather than do a sweep over it right now. preserving the last bit of my sanity

Current steps:
Fill in everything I’ve missed
Add 1 field (Last Activity)
At first I had 2 date fields: “First Release” and “Last Update”. Adding “Last Activity” to this should cover most of the cases I’d want these dates for in the first place.
Last Update will be for the last playable release. Last Activity for the last time the dev has released a devlog or similar. will be adding links to this last update.

Next up:
More fields (Screenshots and characters)
will also be adding some more useful fields, once I think of them. One such field (honestly the only one I currently have written down here) is determining what system a game uses (metric? imperial? both?)
nothing more confusing than having to read lbs when I have no idea how that translates. Would be nice to at least know in advance.

with that, once again.
if any of you ever have had any questions like “does this game use a metric or imperial system to display the weight of my blob?”
do put them here, there might be an informative field hiding in that question

It will be good to add tags to all pages (i mean add tags to wikijs for search)
(two month ago i do a converting user maintaining list to json format, might be useful)
